#Endometriosis and #uterinefibroids are common disorders among women of reproductive age which have previously been shown to be associated with increased risks of #cardiovasculardisease, #hypertension and #cancer. However, the associations between endometriosis and uterine fibroids and subsequent mortality risk as well as the impact of co-occurrence of the two disorders have not been well characterized. In a recent prospective cohort study, investigators sought to investigate the effect of endometriosis and uterine fibroids on the long-term risk of premature mortality. Female nurses living in the United States between the ages of 25-42 were identified as part of the Nurses’ Health Study II ongoing prospective cohort. Women were excluded if they had a prior history of cardiovascular disease or cancer before enrollment or had a hysterectomy prior to diagnosis of endometriosis or uterine fibroids. Overall, 110,091 women were enrolled in the study and received questionnaires until death or end of follow-up in June 2019, with deaths under the age of 70 years being defined as premature deaths. The results found that endometriosis was associated with premature death respiratory diseases. Alternatively, uterine fibroids were not associated with all-cause premature mortality. When jointly categorizing participants based on occurrence of endometriosis and uterine fibroids, an increased risk of total mortality was observed in women reporting endometriosis only as well as women reporting endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Overall, this study found a history of endometriosis and uterine fibroids was associated with a greater risk of premature mortality and that endometriosis was associated with a greater risk of non-malignant mortality. https://lnkd.in/euz4Hapt #CancerResearch

#OvarianCancer is more common in women who have experienced #menopause, which usually occurs in women over the age of 50, but it can also affect younger women. Regardless of age, it is so important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer as the earlier ovarian cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat and the better chance of survival. Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may include - persistent pelvic or abdominal pain - increased abdominal size/persistent bloating - difficulty eating or feeling full quickly - urinary symptoms (needing to urinate more urgently or frequently) - changes in bowel habits - extreme fatigue - unexplained weight loss - vaginal bleeding after menopause Symptoms of ovarian cancer are frequent (i.e., happening more than 12 times a month), persistent, and new (they are not normal for you) and may have commenced in the last year. If you do experience any of these symptoms it may not be anything serious but it’s important to contact your physician because identifying ovarian cancer early improves the chances of successful treatment. https://lnkd.in/e2G-RVB4 #CancerResearch

While cancer that affects the ovaries is considered ovarian cancer it is important to note that there are several different types of ovarian cancer. The ovaries are made up of several different types of cells, therefore, each type of cell can develop into a different kind of cancer which then dictates how it is spread, how it is treated and the prognosis of the disease. Breast density, which refers to the amount of fatty versus glandular tissue in the breast, has long been linked to an increased risk of #breastcancer. #Mammography (a screening procedure) is less sensitive in detecting cancer in dense breasts, leading to potential false negatives. Dense breast tissue not only increases cancer risk, but also makes it harder to detect tumors through routine mammograms. This limitation may result in missed diagnoses and more interval cancers, where breast cancer is diagnosed between screenings. A new study confirms that breast density plays a significant role in both the risk of breast cancer diagnosis and the sensitivity of mammography, which may affect screening practices. The study, published in the American Journal of #Epidemiology, showed that women with dense breasts had a 1.8 times higher likelihood of being diagnosed with breast cancer compared with women with less dense breasts. Additionally, when accounting for screening sensitivity, the relative risk of developing breast cancer was 1.7 times higher for women with dense breasts. The study found that the sensitivity of #digitalmammography is 73% for women with extremely dense breasts, compared with 93% for women with mostly fatty breasts. While the study does not change current screening recommendations, women with dense breasts should be aware of their higher risk and discuss additional screening options, such as MRIs or ultrasounds, with their doctors. https://lnkd.in/efZwsuZ9 #CancerResearch
