Join us for the 7th workshop in our Professional Development Workshop series where we will learn all about Presentation and Communication skills within marine biology with our wonderful host Valentina Scarponi. The workshop will focus on communication and presentation skills, which are key in the field of marine science as we often find ourselves in need of sharing information with different stakeholders. From academics to conservation agencies and members of the public, we will discuss elements of good practice, the dos and don'ts of presentations, and work through an interactive exercise to better frame these concepts, always reminding ourselves that there is no escape from practice, practice, practice as the only way to master the art of public speaking. A little about Valentina: Since 2020, Valentina has been a lecturer in Ecology and Animal Biology, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students from national and international backgrounds at the University of Sussex and four other institutions in Florida, Canada, and South Africa. She finds the role of teacher and research supervisor highly rewarding and is committed to staying engaged with current pedagogic research while pursuing opportunities to enhance her teaching skills. Her research interests include shark behaviour, ecophysiology, conservation, fisheries management, coral reef monitoring and restoration, predator-prey interactions, and the effects of habitat degradation on marine communities. Valentina is also a project leader for the Sussex Kelp Project, collaborating with the University of Sussex, Blue Marine Foundation, and Sussex Wildlife Trust. This project involves collecting BRUV and eDNA data, along with kelp samples, to monitor ecosystem recovery along the Sussex coast after the trawling exclusion zone was established in early 2021. WHEN: Friday 25th of October at 6pm GMT HOW: Click this link at the time of the event! https://lnkd.in/eNXPhw6g

Marine Biologist, Wildlife Filmmaker & Founder of Women in Ocean Science

This is an extremely difficult post to write for me, so here goes... As many of you know, I founded and have been leading Women in Ocean Science, a non-profit turned charity working to empower women in the ocean space. This venture has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but like many young NGOs, the struggle for funding has been constant, and more than often, rather stressful. I have held this role voluntarily since starting the organisation in 2018, but now, as my own journey as a marine scientist evolves, I have come to the incredibly difficult realisation that I can no longer dedicate the time and energy needed to manage the organisation day-to-day and to best serve our wonderful community. So, it’s time for me to take a step back, and that’s where I need your help. We’re looking for someone new to step up as our Managing Director, a passionate leader ready to guide our incredible charity into a new era and to help drive our mission forward. What We're Looking For: + You have experience in the nonprofit sector and are ready for a new challenge + You’re excited by the opportunity to shape and lead a young, fast-growing organisation with a big vision + Someone who shares our passion for empowering women for a healthy ocean ???? + A leader who can inspire and coordinate our amazing team of volunteers. + A strategic thinker who is also ready to roll up their sleeves and get things done. + Ideally, experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, or community building—but passion is the most important part! The Role: As Managing Director, you’d be at the heart of our work—leading our projects, coordinating our community, and working closely with the board of trustees to shape the future of Women in Ocean Science. This is a voluntary role initially, but it offers a rewarding opportunity for personal growth, impact, and being part of a cause that truly matters. Importantly, we’re looking for someone who can eventually secure their own salary through fundraising, grants, and partnerships. I’m excited to stay on as a trustee and will be here to support our new Managing Director during the transition. But we need someone who can take the reins and bring fresh energy and ideas to the charity. If this resonates with you or someone you know, please reach out to me directly. I’d love to chat about the role and what it could look like. Please amplify and share as widely as you can. Thank you for helping us find the right person to take Women in Ocean Science into its next chapter. ??

We’re thrilled to announce that our Empower Ocean project has been endorsed as a UN Decade Ocean Action, attached to “No. 64. Empowering Women for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development”. EMPOWER OCEAN delivers ocean literacy, marine conservation and dive training programmes to local women within small-island, coral reef communities. Developed by WOS in collaboration with local stakeholders, we empower women with the skills, resources and confidence to take an active role in protecting their marine ecosystem. Looking forward to the development of our project and to continually work with such fantastic partners! ?? #womeninoceanscience

Thrilled to see the team is out shooting episode 3 of the mini doc in Scotland this week!

Marine Biologist, Wildlife Filmmaker & Founder of Women in Ocean Science

Mist, rain and high-spirits... we're in the Scottish Highlands to film episode 3 of the Women in Ocean Science mini doc series! Today we're following Anna Safryghin from Open Seas, as she takes to sea to look at an illegally dredged scallop site, with the hopes of documenting an ecosystem in recovery. Onboard a traditional herring lugger we crept our way out to sea, enjoying the challenges (and excitement) of filming and doing science onboard a boat with no motor. We also were a man down for this episode as COVID struck again.. but thankfully Nicole Holman jumped to the rescue and we made it up to Ullapool to film our third and final episode. Stay tuned for updates! This week's team: Onscreen Scientist: Anna Safryghin Director & DoP - yours truly BCam / BTS - Nicole Holman Photography BTS / Research Assistant Rosa P.
