  • It’s a pleasure to introduce our #NextGenWICGE #3: Inaiê Miranda ?? Brazilian Researcher | Coastal & Marine Geologist ???? Inaiê holds a B.Sc. in Oceanography from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA, Brazil) and a Ph.D. in Science with a focus on Coastal and Marine Geology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS, Brazil). ?? Passion for coastal dynamics Her research journey spans wave-dominated (Southern Brazil) and tide-dominated (Northern Brazil) environments, where she studied shoreline evolution and erosive processes, with a stronger background in lagoon systems. During her Ph.D., she focused on the mesoscale morphodynamics of cuspate spits, with a case study in Patos Lagoon (Lagoa dos Patos, Brazil). ?? Key Publications: ?? Shoreline Evolution of Lagoon Sandy Spits (https://lnkd.in/djaxJFKh) ?? Hydrodynamic Processes in Lagoa dos Patos (https://lnkd.in/djQGBAmf) ?? Sediment Budget of a Cuspate Shoreline (https://lnkd.in/d-8vx-R3) ?? Morphodynamics of Coastal Lagoons (https://lnkd.in/djApXYPk) ?? All about geomorphology: From recent to past After completing a postdoctoral fellowship in Coastal Engineering at UFPA, where she also taught in the Petroleum Engineering program, Inaiê transitioned to paleoenvironmental research. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at NECOD/IPH-UFRGS, applying physical modeling to investigate the Brazilian Pre-Salt reservoir rocks. Her work involves simulating the paleoenvironment of rift-lake systems, focusing on hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes that shaped Pre-Salt Coquinas deposits. ?? Future goals: Coastal Nature-Based Solutions Driven by a deep passion for coastal morphodynamics, Inaiê aims to work on Coastal Nature-Based Solutions projects. She aspires to join a university faculty, where she can contribute through teaching, research, and the development of applied solutions for coastal restoration and protection. ?? Let’s celebrate Inaiê’s inspiring work in coastal geoscience and engineering! • ?? We are pleased to introduce you to our second #NextGenWICGE: Valeria Fanti ? ???? Valeria has Bachelor's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Tor Vergata in Rome and a Master's degree in Marine and Coastal Systems from the University of the Algarve in Faro. ? ?? She has worked with wave energy converters, both understanding wave propagation over such structures at the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering in Lisbon, and assessing the wave energy resource for their deployment at Polytechnic of Turin. ? ???? Currently she is a Ph.D. candidate in Marine, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Universidade do Algarve, and two weeks ago she submitted her thesis (!) entitled "Global assessment of coastal storm hazards on barrier islands". Two more publications on this topic will follow soon, but in short, she evaluated open-access global datasets of topo-bathymetry (e.g. TanDEM-X, Copernicus GLO-30, ETOPO 2022), wave reanalyses (ERA5 and WAVERYS, https://lnkd.in/d25RZXu7) and water levels (GTSM) as alternatives to high resolution datasets for erosion and flooding assessments using the XBeach process-based model. This approach enabled the identification of erosion and flooding hotspots across 30 barrier islands worldwide, providing a framework for prioritising risk mitigation efforts for remote and data-poor regions in the face of increasing coastal hazards. ? ?? We are thrilled to announce that she has joined our team as the WICGE Portugal Regional Representative! If you're attending the #CoastalDynamics2025 Conference in Aveiro this April, you'll have the opportunity to meet her in person. She is eager to connect with both current and future #WICGE members at the conference! ???????????????? ???? ????????, ?????? ???????? ?????????????? ?????????? ???? ???????????? Yesterday was the International Day of Women and Girls in Science ??????. Like every year, I’ve seen institutions celebrating inspiring female scientists—those who have made it to the top. ?????? ?????? ?????????? ?????????????? ??????’?? ???????????? ???? ???????? ???????????? ??????????; it is also reinforced by structural barriers, many of them tied to the challenge of work-life balance, the disproportionate burden of family responsibilities on women, and the dedication required to stay fully committed to academia. As I watch scientific and academic institutions applaud our achievements, ?? ???????? ???????????? ???????????????????? ???? ?????? ???????? ???? ???????? ?????????????? ???????????? ?????????????????????? ?????????????? ???????? ???? ???????????? ??????????????, precisely at a critical stage of our careers. In my case, I have requested administrative flexibility to travel with my family to conferences and research stays so that I can continue breastfeeding my baby. I am not asking for my familiy trip to be funded, just for the possibility to adjust flight and accommodation bookings. Yet something so simple seems impossible to arrange. And when I have managed to make it work, it has been after countless hours wasted trying to fit solutions into an inflexible system. This has led me, for example, to step down as a convener at EGU this year, because as we were required to reduce the number of conveners in my session, I felt it was unfair for a colleague to withdraw when I was the one who might not be able to attend. Now, I am facing yet another puzzle: how to participate in a major field campaign this spring without giving up my right to mother. We don’t just need to be told how inspiring we are once per year. ???? ???????? ???? ???? ???????? ???? ???????????????? ?????????? ?????????????? ?????????????? ???????????? ???? ???????????? ?????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????? ?????? ????????????????. We need equal parental leave policies (in countries where they are not yet in place) because male researchers (?surprise?) can and must take care of their children too and, while they don’t breastfeed, they can share domestic responsibilities. We need to ban meetings beyond a certain hour. We need to increase financial support for mothers and fathers returning to the lab after extending their parental leave. ?????????????? ???????????? ???? ?????? ???????? ???????? ?????? ???? ???????? ???? ???????? ????????????, ????’?? ???????? ?????? ???? ???????? ???? ??????????????. #WomenInSTEM #WorkLifeBalance #MothersInScience #GlassCeiling Women In Coastal Geoscience and Engineering
