Shaping the Path Forward.

关于我们

Women in AI Governance was born of an understanding that AI governance is inherently dynamic and will continuously shift and evolve alongside technology, organizational risk appetites, and international regulations. AI governance requires the continual adaptation and a proactive approach to managing the risks and opportunities presented by AI innovation. We champion the indispensable contributions of women, who bring unique insights too often missing from technology and regulatory discussions. By unifying this community, conversation, and diverse voices, we are better equipped to anticipate and navigate challenges, and innovate and share solutions. Our mission is to foster an inclusive environment and true community, where collaboration and shared expertise fuel advancements in AI governance, and further the ability of organizations and nations alike to implement and refine their AI governance frameworks. Founded by seasoned privacy experts and dynamic technology entrepreneurs, Emerald de Leew-Goggin and Shoshana Rosenberg bring decades of combined experience, insight and experience to Women in AI Governance. Both founders are recognized thought leaders in the intersection of AI, privacy and governance. Their extensive backgrounds in pioneering new approaches, developing software solutions, and leading industry dialogues enhance our initiative’s capacity to influence and lead in AI governance, promoting a diverse and engaged community.

Last week I had the honor of sharing a stage with Chelsea Nakogee and Shaun McCumber at the #VIPSS conference in Victoria, BC. It is an interesting time to be talking about #sovereignty in Canada. Over the last few months we have seen Canadians come together to stand up to threats to wellbeing and prosperity, disregard for cultural identity, and gaslighting on a global scale. Canadians are incredibly proud of the country’s unified response to a threat to undermine its sovereignty. I asked the panelists, “what needs to change in order for Canada to be proud of how it respects the sovereignty of Indigenous people?” Chelsea and Shaun spoke from their hearts about what Indigenous Data Sovereignty means to them, about generational trauma, and the exhaustion from having to fight for their fundamental rights. They echoed Jeff Doctor’s sentiments in his recent post “We can do something different” (linked below in the comments). Chelsea walked through a specific example of how the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) is currently using Indigenous data without consultation, and disregarding opposition from rights holders. They refuse to engage in a meaningful way, and enable some Children’s Aid Societies to withhold data from Indigenous communities, blocking children and families from accessing culturally grounded support. They’re doing this under the guise of privacy, and with no respect for the principles of OCAP?. Chelsea laid out three specific, concrete calls to action. Shaun shared wisdom gained throughout his 40 year career as a steward, advocate, and innovator; as a lifelong learner; and as the grandson of 6 Cree grandmothers, and the grandfather of a proud Metís Princess! Shaun talked about mistakes and lessons learned along the way as they figured out how to design technology and systems, and the work he is currently doing with Mustimuhw to design an Indigenous Digital Health Ecosystem. He implored us to focus on sustainability as we go forward. The slides are available, and Shaun and Chelsea generously prepared a long list of resources to learn more about Indigenous Data Sovereignty. #databack https://lnkd.in/gC3nNTFP Thank you, Shaun and Chelsea, for educating and inspiring me, and thank you Greg Spievak, Christine Barry, and Reboot Communications Ltd. for another amazing conference.

    • Photo of Chelsea Nakogee explaining a slide about the current issues with Indigenous Data Sovereignty in the Child Welfare system in Ontario. Slides are available for download.
    • Quote from Shaun McCumber: Digital Colonialism refers to the control and domination of digital technologies and infrastructure by a few powerful countries or corporations, leading to a new form of imperialism in the digital age.
This reliance can lead to exploitation, loss of autonomy, and digital inequality. And has extreme repercussions for Indigenous Nations who are at the beginning of their digital journey.
    • Quote from Chelsea Nakogee: Before we can talk about Indigenous Data Sovereignty, I think we have to acknowledge Indigenous sovereignty, period, and their inherent rights as nations and peoples prior to colonization. This means acknowledging that the western way is not always the right way, and that a one-size-fits-all approach cannot always be taken.

Last Wednesday, I attended an exciting Women in AI Governance? (WiAIG) event at the Northeastern University Toronto campus. The lineup of panelists was impressive, featuring industry leaders and experts in the field such as: - Patricia Thaine - Private AI - Sedef Akinli Kocak, PhD, MBA - Vector Institute - Jessica Blackman - Vector Institute - Kathrin Gardhouse - AIGS Canada - AI Governance & Safety and other initiatives. The event was moderated by the amazing Saima Fancy an enthusiast of Privacy Engineering and AI Governance. This setting provided me with an excellent opportunity to reconnect with friends and colleagues while engaging in meaningful discussions about the global AI landscape and its implications for Canada. Key takeaways from the event: ?? Incentivizing local AI hubs: There's a pressing need to support small companies with incentives similar to those offered abroad, addressing the unique challenges faced by Canadian firms. ?? Nurturing early talent: We must actively promote and sponsor emerging professionals, especially women, to join the AI industry. ?? Combating "Brain Drain": Implementing strategies to retain local talent is crucial for Canada's AI ecosystem. ?? Balancing innovation and governance: While fostering innovation is important, certain non-negotiable factors must be addressed before advancing the conversation. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration and strategic planning in shaping Canada's AI future. I'm anticipating the next gathering to continue these relevant discussions. Thanks for the treats and the great organization to all the volunteers! ?? Saima Fancy #AIGovernance #Privacy #Canada #AIInnovation #WomenInTech #WomenInAI
