? Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we amplify the voices of women with disabilities who are disproportionately affected by gender-based violence. ?? Women with disabilities face higher rates of physical, sexual, and emotional violence, often compounded by barriers to justice, inaccessible support services, and harmful stereotypes. At Women Enabled International, we are committed to addressing these injustices by advocating for inclusive policies, supporting survivor-centered interventions, and ensuring that the unique experiences of women with disabilities are central to global conversations about eliminating violence. Join us in the fight to end violence against women with disabilities. Together, we can break down barriers and build a more equitable future. ?? ?? We're thrilled to highlight the insights shared by?Alana Cavalcante Carvalho,?WEI's Senior Program Officer for Advocacy and Accountability, at the recent conference hosted by the European Association of Service Providers for Persons with Disabilities (EASPD) in Brussels. Alana?spoke on the roundtable “Comprehensive Sexuality Education for Young Persons with Disabilities – European and International Perspectives,” where she shared preliminary findings from the Legal Capacity Project. Her discussion underscored the critical challenges faced by women with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities in accessing comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Alana, alongside panelists Samaneh Shabani and Aurélie Baranger, highlighted how disproportionate barriers in education access, lack of accessible sexuality information and services, and social isolation deepen these issues, especially for young women and gender-diverse individuals with disabilities. Thank you, EASPD, for hosting such a vital conversation. We look forward to building on this work and advocating for greater inclusivity and equity in SRH rights.? ??

This week, the GIAff4ID project brought together 30 participants to explore how to promote the sexual and reproductive health rights of young people with intellectual disabilities?? Together researchers, self-advocates, and support service providers highlighted the need to bridge the data gap and engage directly with youth and families to better support people in understanding and expressing their relational and sexual needs. ?? The event concluded with a call for a universal, yet targeted approach to comprehensive emotional and sexuality education, ensuring inclusivity, gender sensitivity and respect for individual needs and cultural contexts. ?? On October 25, 2024, a groundbreaking step was made for women’s representation: the #CEDAW Committee launched General Recommendation No. 40 (GR40) on the Equal and Inclusive Representation of Women in Decision-Making Systems! Women Enabled International (WEI), in partnership with the Inclusive Generation Equality Collective (IGEC), played a key role in shaping this recommendation, pushing for a disability-inclusive perspective. Our submission highlighted the urgent need to ensure that women with disabilities are not only present in decision-making spaces but also empowered to lead and make their voices heard. ??? In the words of Gertrude Oforiwa Fefoame, Chair of the CRPD Committee and IGEC member, “We are still fighting to enter decision-making spaces on an equal basis with others, a fight that pulls our attention away from the substantive contributions we can and should make to those spaces.” The GR40 is an extremely valuable tool which women, girls and gender diverse people with disabilities can use to demand for equal, meaningful, and accessible representation. ???? #GR40 #WomenInLeadership #InclusiveDecisionMaking https://lnkd.in/ehdnNRHz

?? ?In uncertain times, our commitment only grows stronger. Amid shifting currents and challenging moments, Women Enabled International (WEI) remains steadfast in advocating for the rights of women, girls, and gender-diverse people with disabilities. Our recent retreat in Rome was more than just a meeting—it was a powerful gathering where our team connected, learned, and strategized to confront the obstacles and backlash faced by our communities. Together, we honed our new strategic plan, reinforcing our dedication to building an inclusive, feminist future where no one is left behind. Our approach is clear: foster resilience, share knowledge, and unite in bold advocacy that transcends borders. Through capacity building, bridge-building, and expanding access to power, we are creating a roadmap to a just world where all can thrive. In the face of hate, we continue to imagine and work toward a world where rights are fully realized and the voices of our communities are at the center of change.??? ???? Today, we celebrate the UN International Day of Care and Support, which recognizes the essential role of care work in our societies. But what is the care economy? What is care work? It’s the daily labor—often unpaid—of caring for others, from childcare and elder care to support for people with disabilities. This work, predominantly done by women, has historically gone unrecognized and undervalued. So why is this day important? The UN has named October 29th as a day to elevate global attention on the need for fair policies that recognize and support care work, ensuring all caregivers are valued. Today and every day, WEI advocates for an equitable, inclusive world where care is central to our economy. #InternationalDayOfCare #CareEconomy #DisabilityRights #GenderEquality

???? Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)! At Women Enabled International, we envision a world where women and gender-diverse people with disabilities lead in every professional field, without barriers or bias. ?? NDEAM exists to highlight the importance of disability inclusion in the workforce and to raise awareness about the contributions and challenges faced by people with disabilities in employment. This annual observance, led by the U.S. Department of Labor, reminds us of the critical work needed to achieve equity in the workplace. ? This NDEAM, we honor the resilience and achievements of disabled individuals in the workforce and continue to advocate for inclusive policies, accessible workplaces, and equal opportunities for all. When we create work environments where accessibility and equity are prioritized, we build pathways for true inclusion. #NDEAM #DisabilityEmployment #InclusionMatters #EmploymentForAll #WomenEnabled #DisabilityRights #EqualOpportunities #WorkplaceInclusion

?? Flor and Luz's Story: A Call for Reproductive Justice in the Dominican Republic On October 21, 2024, the Dominican State unjustly restricted Flor’s visits to her daughter Luz, a 14-year-old girl with severe disabilities and a survivor of sexual violence, now facing a high-risk pregnancy. Despite reassurances, Flor was never told where Luz would be taken, and their visits have been limited. ?? "Once again we see ableism in all its splendor and how it terribly affects the lives of girls and adolescents with disabilities," says @Maryangel García-Ramos Guadiana, Executive Director of Women Enabled International. "The Dominican State continues to violate Luz through institutionalization, lack of access to decent health services, and separation from her mother. Girls must have a dignified life free of violence and abuse, not being forced to give birth." We stand with Flor, Luz, and all girls and adolescents with disabilities. The Dominican State must end forced institutionalization and ensure access to justice and comprehensive healthcare. #ReproductiveJustice #DisabilityRights #EndViolence #GirlsDeserveBetter #StandWithFlorAndLuz Women's Link Worldwide https://lnkd.in/e-fDYVEF
