Understanding Migraines: Causes & Dietary Interventions ???? What is a Migraine? A migraine is not just a headache; it’s a neurological condition that causes intense, often debilitating pain, usually on one side of the head. It can last for hours or even days and is often accompanied by symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Some people may also experience auras, which are visual disturbances that occur before the pain begins. Common Causes of Migraines: 1. Genetic Factors: Migraines tend to run in families, indicating a genetic predisposition. 2. Hormonal Changes: Women are more likely to experience migraines due to hormonal fluctuations during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause. 3. Environmental Triggers: Bright lights, strong odors, weather changes, and loud noises can trigger migraines. 4. Stress & Anxiety: Emotional and physical stress is one of the most common migraine triggers. 5. Sleep Issues: Both lack of sleep and oversleeping can contribute to migraine attacks. 6. Dietary Triggers: Certain foods and drinks, such as caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods, can provoke migraines in sensitive individuals. Dietary Interventions for Managing Migraines: 1. Maintain a Consistent Eating Schedule: Skipping meals or fasting can trigger a migraine. Eating balanced meals at regular intervals helps stabilize blood sugar levels, reducing the risk. 2. Magnesium-Rich Foods: Magnesium deficiency has been linked to migraines. Foods like spinach, almonds, seeds, and avocados are excellent sources of magnesium. 3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These healthy fats found in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, as well as flaxseeds and walnuts, have anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce migraine frequency. 4. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration is a common migraine trigger. Make sure to drink enough water throughout the day. 5. Avoid Caffeine & Alcohol: Both caffeine and alcohol can lead to dehydration and act as migraine triggers in some individuals. It’s essential to monitor your intake. 6. Avoid MSG and Processed Foods: Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and artificial sweeteners like aspartame are known migraine triggers for many people. Reducing processed food intake can help. 7. B Vitamins: Vitamins B2 (riboflavin) and B12 can help reduce the frequency of migraines. Foods like eggs, meat, and dairy are rich in these vitamins. 8. Herbal Teas: Ginger, tumeric, peppermint, and chamomile tea can help soothe migraine symptoms and reduce nausea. Migraines can be life-altering, but with the right diet and lifestyle changes, you can take control and reduce their impact on your life. Let’s Beat Migraines Together! ?? #MigraineAwareness #MigraineRelief #HealthyLiving #DietaryIntervention #Wellness #MigrainePrevention

As neuroscience research participation becomes more inclusive, questions about whether and how to utilize measures of race and ethnicity in neuroscience research have taken on increasing importance. Should race and ethnicity population descriptors always be collected and reported? What definitions should be used for these categories? How might such data be mis-used? To address questions such as these the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) convened an expert committee to assess the use of race and ethnicity in biomedical research. The resulting 2024 report,?Rethinking Race and Ethnicity in Biomedical Research, outlines nine actionable recommendations and associated resources for advancing the responsible use of race and ethnicity. In this virtual event, Professors Ruqaiijah Yearby, JD, MPH and Margaret Moss, PhD, JD, RN, FAAN, will join moderator Francis Shen, JD, PhD for a discussion of the NASEM report’s lessons for the role of race and ethnicity in neuroscience research, and implications for advancing inclusiveness and equity in neuroscience research participation. This event is part of a public lecture series supported by the Improving Recruitment Engagement, and Access for Community Health Equity for Human Neuroimaging Research (REACH for BRAIN) project.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was successfully celebrated at NVRI Staff School, Vom. This event aimed to inspire and educate young girls about the field of neuroscience, emphasizing the importance of brain health, the nervous system, and career opportunities in science. The event was made possible by Women in Neuroscience (WIN), Nigeria and the dedication of team members who facilitated the session. The school management and staff showed great support, and the students actively participated with enthusiasm. Although a physical brain model was unavailable, flashcards of the brain and educational slides were used effectively to explain key neuroscience concepts. The students were particularly fascinated by the discussion on neuroscience careers, with many expressing admiration for Dr. Ben Carson, the renowned neurosurgeon. To reinforce their learning, a quiz was conducted at the end of the session. The top two students were awarded a packet of notebooks and a lab coat as a way to encourage them and prepare them for a future in science. I extend my sincere gratitude to the founder of WIN, Nigeria, for this invaluable opportunity. Special appreciation also goes to the team members Ginika Nwobodo Ugwu, Faith Ava and Aondofa Robert, whose dedication contributed to the success of the event. I can't help but appreciate the Principal and Management staff of the school, my undergraduate and post graduate Lecturers, my mentor Professor Chinna Orish, my secret advisor??
