??We had a lovely chat with Molly McKinney this morning. ????And we couldn’t be more pleased that she loves coming to #WomeninCEA because it fills her cup. ??Even if she is usually taking the call from the road, she loves to start her Tuesdays with us! ????♀?Aside from gushing about our group we learned about Molly’s extensive CEA background. She started in #landscaping and then #construction loving what plants can add to a space and landscape. ??As a #Kentucky native she delved into #CEA with AppHarvest as grower in three different roles. She transitioned to Square Roots in #leafygreen production. After working as a #grower and in #production for a while she decided to pivot from the demand of production and sense of urgency to #Sales and a forward facing position. ???She has always been solutions oriented and huge piece of her job is #timemanagement. Molly is always forecast and #planning. ??She has learned from male colleagues how to #saynowithgrace. Work and personal life is always a balancing act. You need to ensure your #glassisfull leaving a conversation whether if it’s for work or personal. ??It’s important to take time to #reflect where time sits and if relationships that you are managing are energizing and #motivating you or leave you feeling depleted. ??It’s important to know it’s okay to press pause when needed. ??If Molly was to impart some #advice she would say to walk with as much #confidence as you can. #Holdyourown in conversation and what bringing to table, while keeping the #dooropen to #learning. ??♀?There are a lot of occasions where you may be the #onlyfemaleintheroom or the #youngest in the room, but you shouldn’t be taken any less seriously. Your #opinion and #experiences from this #perspective are #valuable. ??You need to #enjoywhatyoudo at end of the day. If you are feeling #depleted you want to ensure the #energy you are putting in is worth while. ??????It goes back to #balance of personal life and managing work. #Success is being able to close your laptop and not look at it until the next morning and feel okay about it. ? Today #WomeninCEA had the pleasure of speaking with Rachael Warner. ???? Rachael has a background in plant science research at McGill University. She works currently at Les Fermes Lufa / Lufa Farms. ?? ?? Lufa Farms has 5 #greenhouses and one #indoorfarm and focus on growing #tomatoes, #eggplant, #peppers, and a wide variety of #leafygreens. ?? ?? Coming from a background in #academia Rachael was used to looking at #papers, #numbers, and doing smaller scale #trials. ?? It's important to realize that papers can make crazy #assumptions like #water that plants retain at the end is the only water used, or only 10% of water is flushed. ?? Today she shared what she has learned in the #industry #application of her #research #knowledge. ?? When talking about #substrates, we?want to think about how it interacts with water, its #porosity, #material and how this?#influences #plants. The water #holding #capacity of substrate influences the presence of #pythium in the system. ?? #Temperature of water is a huge influence. Dissolved #oxygen getting to the #root #zone depends?on the #design of the system and needs to be #monitored which will impact the #health of roots and #microbes. ?? Dissolved #oxygen in the system can be increased using #nanobubblers and hydrogen peroxide along with other methods. ?? #Hydroponics foundation is EC and pH, it will change with the #crop #growth stage. Using #organic #formulations vs. #salts used as standard in industry is an important consideration. ? When #plants are in a system and roots are releasing #chemicals and it stays in the system and is #recycled. It's important to understand how this is affecting other #crops at all #lifestages within the system. ? ? When it comes to #filtration, the industry as a whole doesn't have a good grasp. This is a bit of a black box. ?? #Microbial #environment and actual #ecosystem are important considerations. A lot of #microbes in root zones and water can be approached using beneficial #microorganisms. ?? #Irrigation #timing with #lighting is important, specifically #frequency and #duration. ? #Recirculation is a key to #sustainability in CEA, industry standard #flushing is 10-30% of #water #volume weekly. Flushing is required to keep the #ecosystem #healthy. ?? The #goal is to have 100% recirculation of water, but the industry isn't there yet. ? Weren't able to join the session? No worries!
