Long-term partnership. Local action. Better lives.
关于我们
Women First is a 50-year old public charity, giving grants to grassroots initiatives driven by women and girls globally. The work of grassroots organizations changes lives from the inside out. Woman by woman. Community by community. This approach takes time and diligence, but it is how meaningful change happens. We envision a world where gender equity prevails and in which every woman and girl has the power to thrive. We believe that if we combine grant funding with true collaboration, targeted networking and skill-building, grantees will be positioned for greater impact as they implement local solutions to gender inequity in their communities.

Sharing a stage with UN Women Deputy Executive Director Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda Gumbonzvanda I got to ask her how can we resource women, girls and youth to ensure meaningful implementation of our work, sustained action and response? “ As a leader who is very much interested in transparency and accountability when it comes to funding and financing young people, I cannot stop emphasizing that we need Data that show the reality of financing and funding for youth, women and girls The panel had also amazing young woman activist such as Zakira Rasooli Rasooli from Afghanstan whose story is a force to reckon with and Felipe who represents the UN youth office. #CSW69

“The harsh reality is most funders will phase out. What sustains our work is relationships and solidarity.” Azungla James, co-founder of Sisterhood Network, a women-led organization in Nagaland, India, reflected on this truth as she thought about how Rural Women Upliftment Society (RWUS) has continuously done what it takes to build community power—both over the past six years of their partnership with Women First, and long before that. Recently, we traveled to Manipur along with Sisterhood Network, and met with incredible Kuki-Zo leaders from RWUS who are driving solutions for gender justice and economic empowerment, even as they grapple with the immediate aftermath of ethnic clashes in the region. We went there for a learning exchange, bringing together two grassroots organizations that continue to push forward despite experiencing systemic exclusion and limited access to resources in one of India’s most underfunded regions. RWUS graciously hosted us, welcoming us with the most delicious food and intentionally creating a space where we could embrace feminist friendships as a source of solidarity and survival. Together, we explored how economic independence gives women voice and decision-making power, how women-led organizations practice feminist principles in their own approach to work, and what it takes to build influence within communities where those in power reject women’s fundamental rights. We also reflected on how weaving (handlooms and stories of strength) is a form of assertion, imagination, and collective action—and how indigenous women-led initiatives sustain partnerships as they remain chronically underresourced and overlooked. We are proud to support this critical work of building a strong foundation for continued sisterhood, and look forward to sharing more about our learnings! #GenderJustice #Sisterhood #CommunityPower #IndigenousWomenLead #WeavingTogether #FeministLeadership #EconomicJustice #WomenFirst
