Last week, our CEO, Meg Egan, testified on behalf of WPA at the Committee on Criminal Justice's Preliminary Budget Hearing. She advocated for the expansion of alternatives to incarceration programs and holistic services aimed at significantly reducing the number of women incarcerated in New York City. Last quarter, WPA helped 12 women return to their communities from Rikers Island. Through our transitional services program, we made sure our clients were connected to the necessary resources and services for themselves and their families.

Sanctuary cities create safer communities where immigrants feel more comfortable communicating with local law enforcement, and fewer crimes are reported.? A law passed in 2014 in New York City grants immigrants incarcerated on Rikers Island with more protections from federal immigration enforcement. These critical measures protect the rights of many individuals in DOC custody. WPA advocates for the safety and security of all incarcerated individuals on Rikers and hopes to see these sanctuary city practices continue into the future.
