Every parent’s worst fear is hearing the words, ‘Your child has cancer.’ Currently, an estimated 10% of Florida children with rare and aggressive pediatric cancers — and approximately 50% of relapsed cases — are forced to seek care outside of Florida adding tremendous stress. Children in our state deserve to have the very best care right here at home. Wolfson Children's Hospital President Allegra Jaros recently spoke with WJCT First Coast Connect about the critical need to bring more world-class cancer care to Florida. For Diabetes Awareness Month, #JingleBeardJared shares a deeply personal journey that began with six words no parent ever wants to hear: "Looks like it’s Type 1 Diabetes." In November 2020, his oldest daughter—just six years old at the time—was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes after troubling symptoms like fatigue and weight loss led to a life-threatening condition called DKA. Since then, their family has navigated the challenges of managing her care with strength, resilience, and the help of life-changing tools like insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors. Fast forward to October 2024, the journey became even more complex when one of their five-year-old twins was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as well. Once again, their family rallied together, determined to adapt and thrive. Jared’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of education, research, and awareness. He emphasizes the misconceptions surrounding Type 1 Diabetes, the need for vigilance with symptoms, and the incredible resilience of those who live with it. Type 1 Diabetes doesn’t define his daughters—it empowers them to show the world they can do anything. With proper care, they can enjoy life fully, from eating birthday cake to riding roller coasters. Their message is one of hope and determination: this condition is a challenge, but it doesn’t limit them. This Diabetes Awareness Month, let’s join the fight for better education, support, and understanding of Type 1 Diabetes. Together, we can make a difference. ?? #DiabetesAwareness #WolfsonWarriors

Farewell, Dr. Henok! Dr. Henok Teshome Molla, a neurosurgeon from Ethiopia, just recently concluded his observership at Wolfson Children's. The Neurosurgery Outreach Foundation shared from Dr. Henok: “The procedures I attended and the skills I acquired from these leading experts in neurosurgery are transformative, especially given that many are not currently performed in the Horn of Africa. The invaluable lessons and advanced techniques will enable me to bridge significant gaps in neurosurgery services in Africa. I am profoundly grateful to the Neurosurgery Outreach Foundation and Trinity Love Hoblit Foundation for this life-changing opportunity, which has thoroughly equipped me to advance in the field of complex pediatric neurosurgery and beyond. A heartfelt thank you to everyone at Wolfson Children's Hospital, Baptist Health, and the Mayo Clinic for making my stay both educational and enjoyable.” Special thanks to all my attending physicians for generously sharing their knowledge and skills. Above all, my deepest gratitude goes to my mentor and advisor, Dr. Aldana, for your unwavering support, unparalleled opportunities, and invaluable guidance. Jacksonville for me was very beautiful. I liked the weather, the beach, the food, everything! But most importantly, I appreciate how kind, understanding and energetic the people were!”
