Yesterday, our Founder, Christopher Wofford, had the honor of awarding the first ever Harris Wofford Joint Service Award on behalf of his family to more than 200 individuals in Houston, Texas at the annual Points of Light Conference. The recipients were selected based upon their having served in BOTH the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps. The award honors the legacy of late Senator Harris Wofford, Chris’ uncle, who helped to found both organizations. A follower of Gandhi’s, Harris was a passionate believer in civic duty and service and was a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement, facilitating key communication between Martin Luther King, Jr. and then Senator Kennedy, which led to JFK’s election and Harris’ becoming Special Assistant on Civil Rights to the President. Harris had an illustrious career in public service and education, culminating in his term in the US Senate. Chris previously served as Harris’ surrogate in the city of Pittsburgh during his uncle’s victory in the Pennsylvania senate race in 1991.? We encourage you to read more about the award/event below.
