While higher education was common in her community, the expectation was to return home and serve. But Marissa envisioned broader horizons, inspired by her father’s educational journey through the Navy and the GI Bill. Her passion for science was sparked early—often accompanying her nurse mother to the lab, where she later realized her mother had unknowingly become the first scientist in their family. Marissa began her pharmacy career in academia and clinical practice, focusing on underserved populations. She later transitioned to the pharmaceutical industry to make a broader impact, rising to the position of Director of Medical Affairs. She values teamwork, but never at the expense of her values or opinions.
