关于我们
Started in 2001, the Washington Center partners with faculty from departments and schools across William & Mary to offer high-impact learning experiences for students in all majors. Among the diverse topics offered are government, policy, culture, business, and education. Since its inception, the Center has grown to become W&M’s “Campus in the City,” running Study in D.C. academic opportunities for almost 300 undergraduate students year-round, with a growing scholarship fund to support them. Study in D.C. opportunities feature connections with W&M’s robust D.C.-area alumni network. These committed alumni offer students a chance to learn directly from topic-specific experts and practitioners in the field. Alumni also serve as mentors, counseling students one-on-one as they prepare to take their experiences to life beyond W&M. The small Center team offers individualized support to each student who comes through the door, with room for almost 400 in an academic year. Students have a personal relationship with the staff and faculty in D.C., which enhances the quality of the overall student experience. Together with many partners, the Center prepares students for life after W&M and provides a home for the entire W&M family.

This was an incredible dialog with incredible people. Working with Chuck Marks, the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies, and across the university with these wonderful faculty helped us deliver an impactful program that will increase defense operational resilience around the globe. We look forward to many more interactions and partnerships in this space. Big thanks you go to the entire team: Molly Mitchell, Kathleen Jabs, Jon Derek Loftis, Rani D. Mullen, Yu Amy Xia, Sarah Stafford, Katie Pelletier, Matthew Newcomb, Heidi LeMaster, and Lydia Urban. And a special thanks to the W&M Washington Center for hosting us and helping: Erin Battle, Caty J., and Roxane Adler Hickey, Ed.D..
Last week, we were honored to partner with the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies to conduct the first Environmental Resilience and Preparedness International Dialog in Washington, D.C. from, 10–12 September 2024. Twenty-one participants from thirteen countries participated in a unique program that brought together strategic planners, policy experts, national security professionals, infrastructure experts, emergency first responders, scientists, and educators to explore the complexities of preparing for climate change, global warming, and the impacts of natural disasters. Our lead faculty instructors were NESA's Chuck Marks and Virginia Institute of Marine Science's Molly Mitchell. Other phenomenal faculty and guest speakers included Jon Derek Loftis (VIMS), Sarah Stafford (Economics, Public Policy, and Law), Rani D. Mullen (Government), Yu Amy Xia (William & Mary – Raymond A. Mason School of Business), Juli Trtanj (NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration), Hunter Jones (NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, Timothy Bentley (Norfolk Southern), and Sahar Khan (The Stimson Center). The program was made possible by the Defense Operational Resilience International Cooperation (DORIC) program administered by the?Office of the Secretary of Defense. The?NESA?Center and William & Mary are exploring a follow-on program in the summer of 2025 in Tampa, Florida, with coalition partners assigned to Central Command and Special Operations Command. #environmentalresilience #climatechange

Quite the ROl if you ask us! Welcoming a past Study in D.C. student to the current Washington Center Advisory Board never gets old. Leaders like Daria Grastara stayed engaged after their time at W&M to mentor and connect with students getting their start in the professional world. This year, we are glad she found a new way to engage. Welcome!
9 years ago I just finished my semester with the W&M Washington Center where I lived, interned, networked, and learned more in 5 months than ever before. The program kickstarted my career in ways I never could have expected and in the last almost decade, I've taken any chance I could to meet with and mentor students, speak on panels in DC, and visit the Williamsburg campus to share my story. Yesterday, I attended my first meeting as a Board Member for the DC campus. I am so excited to play an even bigger role in this Center's legacy. So grateful for Roxane Adler Hickey, Ed.D., who has been the 1 constant of this campus and embodies the infectious energy needed to fuel its innovation, growth, and excellence. & of course, ALWAYS grateful for the opportunities Professor Jaime Settle has given me since my very first Government class of my freshman fall semester -- the reason I applied to the DC semester program 10 years ago. Can't wait to serve on this Board with Meredith Delaware, Kayla Sharpe & all the other fabulous alumni!

I recently watched the critically acclaimed film, Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) directed by Clint Eastwood, and I will watch the companion Flags of our Fathers this weekend. My interest in World War II is sparked by Paul Hendrickson's moving tribute to his father in his latest book, Fighting the Night. If you live in the Washington DC area, please join me this Thursday as I speak to Paul about the book and his decision to place his papers at William & Mary Libraries. All are welcome! Register: https://lnkd.in/eJ8kDUd2 About Paul: https://lnkd.in/eiXyjPNR This is a timely program leading into Father's Day weekend, and on the heals of the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Thanks W&M Washington Center for hosting another great Writers of Washington Event and to Kathleen Jabs for helping us spread the word to the Veterans in our William & Mary community. Politics and Prose Bookstore will be on site and Paul will be signing books following the talk.
