I don't have the words to describe this past week; Helene decimated the place I call home. I still am having trouble comprehending the loss of life, livelihood and property. Today is the first day I've had time to think since the rivers rose and the trees fell; my heart is heavy. I've been told it will take years for some areas to completely recover, some never will. We travelled to some of those places, intentionally. We were told by one person these are "the places the news won't go." We did. The people in Yancey and Mitchell County are simply amazing. Many of them are still cut off digitally, but they wanted the world to know what happened to their home and that they have no plans to sit around doing nothing. In the wake of unimaginable devastation, communities like Chimney Rock show us the resilience of the human spirit. As journalists, it’s our responsibility to tell these stories—the hard truths about loss, the progress being made, and the road ahead. This story isn't just about flooded streets and damaged buildings. It's about 15 businesses lost, 15 homes gone, and the emotional toll on families who poured their hearts into every brick and beam. But it’s also about hope—a community determined to rebuild stronger and better, with volunteers and neighbors rolling up their sleeves to help. Through our work, we shine a light on those in need, amplify their voices, and remind the world not to forget. We all know how quickly the news cycle changes. Thanks to #Milton and the election, the national media has moved on from #Helene's destruction in Western North Carolina. There is still a massively long road to recovery for so many communities there, but progress is being made. I was so grateful to return to my old station WLOS ABC 13 for a week to help the newsroom. Just finished up my internship at WLOS ABC 13! I had a great time and learned a ton. Couldn’t imagine a cooler crew than these guys! Big thanks to Kevin Beattie and Bryan Queen for the opportunity. And another thank-you goes to Smoky Mountain River Adventures for a terrific side job!
