November 8 is National?First-Generation College Student Day /?First?Gen?Day and today we celebrate the resilience, determination, and unique perspectives first-generation students bring to WKU and honors, like Larissa Frisby. Larissa shares that "I am first gen, and my experiences in university have shaped my perspective on education and opportunity.” As a member of?the Chinese Flagship Program at WKU, she "plan[s] to participate in the Language Flagship capstone year, where I will intern and study Mandarin Chinese abroad. Upon my return, I intend to pursue graduate school in the field of Teaching English as a Second Language." Her advice for other first-gen students is "to embrace the challenges you will inevitably face during your university journey. It took me numerous setbacks to recognize my limitations and learn the importance of reaching out for support. As a first-generation student, I had to independently navigate much of what I know about higher education, but I learned that utilizing available resources and seeking help is vital for success. Remember, in twenty years, you may not recall that disappointing test grade or the class in which you dozed off; instead, you will cherish the moments when others extended their support and guidance."
