As Women's History Month continues, we reflect on the women who have impacted individuals at the News 6 team. Hear from Miia Ollesh about her special relationship: "Every time I look at my hands, I think of my grandmother. Not only do I wear a ring I inherited from her, but the anatomy of my aging hands resembles hers. My grandmother’s hands did so much. They held onto a soldier she danced with at an officer’s club in Estonia, a man she would later marry and would become my grandfather. Her hands carried a toddler and a suitcase in 1944, as my grandparents fled their homeland, in the face of the Soviet advance. In the United States, her hands would sew for a living as she secured a job in the alterations division of a department store. Her hands made delicious traditional meals, recipes she would teach her children and grandchildren. Her hands would toil in the dirt as she planted flowers and vegetables, attempting to pass along her green thumb to us. And most importantly, her hands would always hug and hold me, her youngest grandchild. Regardless if it is Women’s History Month or any other time of the year, my thoughts are often on my grandmother. Whether through her resilience for a life of freedom, dedication to her craft, or loyalty to her family, love was always felt in my grandmother’s touch." #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenWhoInspire #News6 #GettingResults

At WKMG News 6, we’re thinking about all the women who have raised us up this Women’s History Month. For anchor Ginger Gadsden, that’s Mrs. Grady, a middle school teacher whose education didn’t stop at the blackboard. “She taught me to carry myself with confidence, to hold my head high even when it felt easier to shrink. She reinforced everything my mom was trying to teach me at home—but, of course, when you’re a kid, advice from a teacher sometimes sticks a little more. Fast forward to about a year and a half ago. I was anchoring the 7 o’clock newscast when I got a text message. It was from Mrs. Grady. She was in town for a conference and had turned on the TV. ’I am attending a church convention in Orlando at the Rosen Centre, turned on CBS, and there you were. My student. Soooooo proud of you. Mrs. C. E. R. Grady. C. E. Williams Middle School.’ That message stopped me in my tracks. Tears filled my eyes. After all these years, she was still watching, still cheering me on.” #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenWhoInspire #News6 #GettingResults
