We conducted research on key C-suite executives at 100 leading community health providers, looking at their career paths, tenure, demographics, and hiring trends. A few key findings: White in their early 50s: Only 1 in 10 (13%) community health top executives are people of color, indicating a clear lack of diversity across the C-suites. Gender differences: The CNO role is predominately filled by females (92%), whereas the CMO role is male-dominated (83%). The CFO and COO roles are also male-dominated, with a recent shift towards slightly greater diversity. Significant turnover: Nearly half (44%) of COOs, CFOs, CMOs, and CNOs have been appointed within the last three years. The primary reason for departures appears to be the pursuit of professional growth rather than retirement. #healthcareleaders #communityhealth #leadershipdiversity

How do deans of nursing rise to their roles? We conducted proprietary research on the career paths of nursing deans at 100 leading schools of nursing. A few key findings: Progressive diversity: 88% of current deans of nursing are women, and 24% are people of color. Impending wave of retirements: A significant proportion of deans of nursing are nearing retirement age, with 40% currently aged 65 years and above (13% aged 70 years and above). High attainment of advanced degrees: 99% of the dean community have doctoral degrees Significant leadership turnover: 36% of deans of nursing have been appointed within the last two years. Route to the top: A majority of deans of nursing (62%) have been appointed externally. Furthermore, a vast portion of deans (78%) served in leadership positions immediately prior to their current dean appointment, with roles including associate deans, deans, or interim deans. Holly Nandan presented at the recent Women In Medicine Summit in Chicago, speaking to attendees about "Taking the Leap to Leadership." "Sometimes, the path is not a straight line," Holly told the group, recounting her own experience starting in healthcare administration only later to find she had a passion for recruiting physicians and physician leaders. "I took a leap into something tangential and paved the way for the next 20 years of my career," she said. Holly shared the following career-focused observations with the women present: 1. Men and women pursue leadership roles differently, but no one individual "checks all the boxes". Women should feel confident in their ability to grow into a role. 2. Build a brand. "What are you passionate about and what do you want to be known for?" Whatever it is, she said, let others know about it to build your brand and differentiate yourself. 3. Build your network. Talk with others and let them know about what you love to work on.?Take advantage of speaking opportunities, opportunities to engage with your colleagues through professional organizations, through conferences, within your organization or on social media platforms. These things will get you noticed, she said. 4.?In physician leadership, EQ is essential. "At the point that physicians are looking to lead, the clinical skills are already proven. The component that needs to be highlighted is what leadership capabilities you have." She added: "Candidates who can be vulnerable and talk about how they've learned and grown through different experiences are authentic and relatable." 5. Be enthusiastic! Especially in the interview process, don't present a "take it or leave it" mentality. 6. Get to know search consultants. Even if a role is not right for you, recommend others and offer to help. By helping search consultants you'll stay on their radar. "Shine the light on the amazing person that you are!" she said in closing. #womenleaders #executivecareers #physicianleaders
