Super cool gear drive tech... Part 2. This gear drive, also from WITTENSTEIN group, uses a similar technology to the video I posted yesterday. However, this gear system uses small sets of gears that, as they mesh, must move slightly in order to align perfectly with the teeth of the outer ring gear. That slight movement is no more than a fraction of a degree, but when the movement is continuous, you end up with slow, rigid rotation. The benefit here is no backlash (one of the few such designs out there). When one of those sets of teeth is fully engaged with the outer gear, there is no possible movement in either direction. The concept of backlash is a big deal in precision systems because when you want to move quickly and stop right on a certain spot, you don't want the tool to be able to wiggle around, it must stop with absolute certainty. That 'wiggling' can be due to the weight of the system itself, or the weight of the load that it contacts. This 'wiggle' is backlash. So how precise do we want? Well, there are systems that must land with extreme precision on a spot that is only 1/1000 of a millimeter, or even less!!

It's an automation show, but you can't have automation without mechanics, right? And there are?some pretty awesome mechanical things to see. But you can't describe gears. You really, honestly need to see them in action... This is a new design of anti-backlash gear system from?WITTENSTEIN group. These gear systems are used to reduce the speed and greatly increase the power (and accuracy) from the motor to the final load, but keep the rotation all in the same axis. Usually, planetary gears use two concentric gears with several smaller gears interfacing between them. This is found in most handheld drill chucks. https://lnkd.in/g8tbpNRP A newer design called a 'strain wave gear' uses an elliptical lobe rotating in the center to provide a meshing between two circular gears, but the two gears have a different number of teeth, so as the center lobe rotates, the outer gear rotates, but more slowly. https://lnkd.in/g5dNPAEr Finally, this new system from Wittenstein uses a central lobed cam to press on angled rods, one after another, to slowly rotate the outer gear as the central cam is rotated. This is useful in high-precision applications like robot arm joints, where starting, stopping, and high speeds should all yield extremely high precision. Looking through the center, you can see how the central cam is rotated many times, while the middle rotating component only completes about 1/3 of a rotation during this clip. Anyway, enjoy!
