Earlier this month, the Financial Times exposed the fact that much of the high-skilled migrant talent in Britain is wasted [1]. The article in question referred specifically to those who’d migrated from Hong Kong post China’s pro-democracy crackdown, but in 2022 the World Economic Forum reported a similar pattern emerging across all of Europe, with "up to 45%" of high-skilled migrants in “jobs that do not reflect their professional levels” [2]. One of the factors contributing to this loss of human capital is the ineffective assessment of foreign qualifications and experience. While this seems to be fairly structural in nature, it can take a very specific cultural hue and, as the Financial Times explains, even minor interventions can make a big difference. For example, one anecdote suggests that foreign-born candidates who emphasise actions taken in previous roles, even if relatively inconsequential, rather than the scale or value of their prior responsibilities, achieve better outcomes in the UK. If you’re an employer or a policy wonk, I thoroughly recommend reading both the Financial Times article and the World Economic Forum analysis. Beyond that, I have three immediate questions: 1. How widespread is this situation (i.e., has anything changed in Europe over the past decade, does it apply to certain groups more than others, etc.), and why isn’t it a larger part of the conversation around immigration policy? 2. What is being done to remedy the problem in the public (e.g., https://lnkd.in/e4kN4VyE) and private sector? 3. What are the already-incurred economic costs associated with this issue, and what could we stand to lose through inaction and/or ineffective action? — [1] https://archive.is/FuwL9 [2] https://lnkd.in/ePDNexzp

As Donald J. Trump was sworn in for his second term earlier this week, I was reflecting on the question of how his administration’s anti-immigration posture will impact the migrants already in America, as well as those considering making the move. Trump is obviously mendacious; a bona fide criminal. The language he’s used to describe entire demographics is frightening and dangerous, and we should all reflect on how anxiety-inducing this sort of rhetoric must feel to the people being “othered”. Shamefully, migrants in Britain must have felt something very similar just a few months ago. The reality is that many migrants do the jobs nobody else will; they’re hard-working, almost always net economic contributors, and enhance our social fabric. Rather than allowing the Trumps and Farages of the world to divide us (both of whom are married to immigrants), let’s do everything we can to empathise with, and champion, the people that make our lives richer and more prosperous.
