According to the U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory "Parents Under Pressure," mental health struggles in children can deeply affect parents and caregivers, especially those of kids facing anxiety, depression, or intellectual and developmental disabilities. Nearly 3 in 4 parents worry their child may experience these challenges, and those caring for children with disabilities often deal with additional stressors like financial strain, complex systems of care, and elevated anxiety or depression. #MentalHealthAwareness #ParentingChallenges #SupportParents #YouthMentalHealth #U.S.SurgeonGeneral

"Throughout my first year, I have come to see even more clearly the importance of centering families in everything we do. It is crucial that the voices of those directly impacted by systemic failures are not only heard but prioritized in shaping the solutions. Families are the true experts on their own needs, and many of them, especially system survivors, carry invaluable insight into how these systems can be transformed." Early childhood development is shaped by the environments where children live, grow, and learn. To support their well-being, we must collaborate across policy domains beyond just "children’s issues." Check out "Place Matters: The Environment We Create Shapes the Foundations of Healthy Development" from the Center on the Developing Child!

When it comes to early childhood development, the conditions in the places where children live, grow, play, and learn shape their development, lifelong physical and mental health, and well-being. By working across policy domains - including those well beyond traditional "children’s issues" - we can provide all children with developmental environments that support their health and well-being, along with their caregivers. On August 28, 2024, the US Surgeon General issued an advisory on the mental health and well-being of parents, calling for a fundamental shift in how we value and prioritize their health. Approximately one million parents live with children five and under in Washington state. Parents experience a range of stress that comes with raising children, including financial strain and economic instability, concerns about children’s health, safety and development, and parental isolation and loneliness. At WithinReach we recognize we are uniquely positioned to support and advocate for parents. As a connection point between families in crisis and the resources they need, we partner with communities to co-design equitable system supports and amplify their voices to lawmakers to ensure essential resources are available and accessible. WithinReach’s 2025 Learning Series Navigating Parenting in Times of Crisis seeks to bring community leaders together to discuss health issues and strategies for achieving better outcomes for families.
