Chasing growth dilutes. Chasing impact distils. It's B Corp Month, and I've been reflecting on what it really means to be a B Corp business. I recently got asked why, after 16 years in business, we weren’t bigger. No matter how much we might fight it, there’s always a bit of us that equates size and scale with success. The Moral Compass voting system we developed at Nice and Serious means that we've turned down lots of lucrative briefs over the years - opportunities that would have made us bigger. But I believe chasing growth would have diluted our brand; bloating the business with work that isn't aligned with our purpose. By chasing impact instead, I think we've distilled our brand; by concentrating what we're good at, we create a virtuous circle – helping us to win more work that's aligned with our purpose.? Chasing impact doesn't mean you can't grow. We continue to grow year on year. But that growth is a means to an end, not an end in itself. So when you boil it down, yes we’re not big. I never listen back to these things as I can't really bear it. But... I've been working with Jeff Melnyk as a coach for the best part of a decade, and I got some really nice messages about this podcast after I posted it. Enough to make me want to check it out. I now realise that Jeff craftily lulled me into have a public coaching session with his soothing ways and excellent questions! But listening to it made me realise two things. One, Jeff is amongst the best in the world at what he does, and I possibly take him a little for granted! Two, getting a little older and less serious about yourself isn't all bad at all.... Thank you for everything Jeff, and here's to another amazing ten years for Within!
