Our good friends at Jobber released their annual Blue-Collar Report and it’s clear: the trades need Gen Z. Here are our top takeaways and why they matter. ?? Closing the Blue-Collar Labor Gap The skilled labor gap is widening, especially in essential trades like electrical work (73,500 annual openings, 6% growth) and HVAC (37,700 annual openings, 6% growth). ??? AI Can’t Fix Your Home More than half of Gen Z respondents worry that white-collar jobs are at risk due to emerging technologies like AI. But AI can't replace the hands-on skills needed in the trades. ?? Gen Z to the Rescue (They Just Don’t Know It Yet) Gen Z is looking for careers that avoid student debt, offer job stability, and reward overtime work—benefits that align perfectly with careers in the trades. ???? We Need More Women There simply aren’t enough women in the blue-collar workforce. Nearly half of Gen Z agree that women are discouraged from pursuing trades careers, leading to a significant gender gap in the trades. ?? Better Blue-Collar Career Counseling Only 17% of Gen Z have been educated on the benefits of vocational training in high school—the lowest among any career path. It’s no wonder that only 27% plan to attend vocational school. Gen Z influencers are showing that blue-collar jobs are not just viable but desirable. From mechanics to electricians, they're making blue-collar go viral and proving that skilled trades offer fulfilling and lucrative paths. The evidence? Uses of #bluecollar are up 64% on TikTok in the first four months of this year compared to 2023. Hashtags like #electrician, #pestcontrol, and #roofing are trending. With job growth expected to continue for electricians, HVAC technicians, and construction workers, this seems like only the beginning.
