Wise Responder is working to support Vale’s Social Ambition to bring 500,000 people out of poverty across Brazil by 2030. Jamie Coats, CEO of Wise Responder, is quoted in Vale’s 2023 Integrated Report on Sustainability. “Vale’s Social Ambition strategy demonstrates a strong commitment to understanding and addressing the complex issue of poverty the communities it is committed to. By focusing on multidimensional poverty measurement, data-driven decision-making, and stakeholder engagement, Vale has the potential to become the leader in responsible mining and development. However, addressing the challenges in data management, analysis and action will be crucial for success.” We have worked with Vale to develop a multidimensional poverty measure appropriate for the people that they are working to support. We are now providing our Wise Responder Action Kit which enables Vale to manage the data, prioritize actions and report results. We deliver the Wise Responder Action Kit through our partnership with Salesforce. The majority of the people supported by Vale’s Social Ambition live in the Amazon region, and this is an incredibly powerful initiative to help understand how to support the development of people living in the Amazon region while at the same time working to do this in an environmentally and economically sustainable way. Earlier this year, Jamie Coats accompanied Vale’s Social Ambition Leaders, include Flavia Constant, to Oxford to meet Professor Sabina Alkire of the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative to review Vale’s approach. Professor Sabina has led the scientific field that has developed government adopted multidimensional poverty indexes. Please read about Vale’s Social Ambition in their 2023 Integrated Report. En el marco de la #COP16 nuestra directora Maria Isabel Ulloa Cruz participó en el panel ′Conectando oportunidades y desafíos sociales y ambientales', junto a Jamie Coats, CEO de Wise Responder; Margarita Casas socia de sostenibilidad y Cambio Climático de PwC Colombia; Andrés Felipe García Azuero, director de Sostenibilidad y Acceso a Mercados de Federación Nacional de Cultivadores de Palma de Aceite, Fedepalma y Pablo Sanit, presidente de Finesa. El panel hizo parte del evento 'Negocios por la vida: desarrollo humano y conservación de la naturaleza', que tuvo lugar en la Casa Británica de la #COP16Cali Embajada Británica en Colombia. También estuvieron presentes Emma Cox, líder Global de Cambio Climático PwC, Luis Fernado Pérez, presidente de Cámara de Comercio de Cali y Ricardo Lozano, director de People and Earth. En el espacio se habló sobre cómo el sector privado puede generar bienestar social y prosperidad económica a partir de la regeneración de la naturaleza y la biodiversidad. Durante su intervención, nuestra directora destacó la importancia del trabajo articulado entre los sectores público y privado junto a las comunidades con visiones compartidas que permitan trazar las metas que se quieren alcanzar no solo en temas medioambientales sino también de pobreza. On this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, at Wise Responder we invite you to reflect: What impact would you like to create during the next 6 months to transform poverty into well-being? It is critical for the private sector to take action and play a role in the reduction of poverty. At the #UNGA79 High-Level side meeting on Poverty Solutions held on September 24, our CEO Jamie Coats and Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI), University of Oxford director Sabina Alkire were invited to lead an important discussion on the #SDG1. The importance of using the Multidimensional Poverty Index to understand which interventions can be done by the private sector, by governments, or collectively was discussed and emphasized. During the meeting, Jamie Coats was accompanied by Malu Pinto e Paiva, the head of sustainability at Vale Brazil. He highlighted Vale's immense efforts to get over half a million people out of poverty in the Brazilian Amazon, emphasizing the value in using data from the MPI model. Vale's initiative is an important case study to show that the private sector can take an active role in poverty alleviation through social investment and through collaboration with governments. An additional thanks to Flavia Constant and Bianca Conde for their involvement and support with the initiative.
