During the Wisconsin Supreme Court's deliberations last week (which thankfully, will ultimately create desperately needed funding for civil legal aid), it was amazing to hear opponents and supporters agree *seemingly unanimously* on two things: - Both praised the work of legal aid providers as necessary and noble for the justice system. - Both agreed the Legislature must provide more support for this key piece of our legal system. Today the Wisconsin Court System / Wisconsin Supreme Court adopted Rule Petition 24-05, which will increase from $50 to $100 the dues assessment which Wisconsin attorneys pay to provide funding for civil legal aid. The Public Interest Legal Services Fund dues assessment for Wisconsin attorneys will increase to $75, then $100 two years later and is distributed by the Wisconsin Trust Account Foundation (WisTAF). Justices Ann Walsh Bradley, Dallet, Karofsky, and Protasiewicz voted in favor of the petition. Chief Justice Ziegler, and Justices Rebecca Bradley and Hagedorn voted against the petition. This funding will assist firms like Legal Action of Wisconsin, Inc., as well as other civil legal aid laws firms across the state. Wisconsin remains one of the few states which provides absolutely no direct state funding for civil legal aid. https://lnkd.in/gmVmx_5k
