The Real Estate Club began here in the late 1970's and has grown to be one of the largest student-run organizations on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Open to both graduate and undergraduate students, the club meets monthly to hear from real estate professionals and practitioners. Our speakers cover a wide range of topics including the debt markets, development, REITs, green building, and institutional trends. As one of the top-ranked undergraduate programs and one of the top-ranked MBA programs in the country, we facilitate countless opportunities to engage lecturers, guests, and alumni from across the globe. We are proud to work closely with the Wisconsin Real Estate Alumni Association to continue the Badger tradition of connecting our students with networking opportunities within the Real Estate industry. In addition to activities on campus, we take two national trips each year. Trips include site tours of key developments, meetings with professionals, networking dinners, and a variety of other opportunities to learn from industry leaders. Local alumni and principals are always on hand and ultimately make it all possible. Past excursions include Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, DC, Phoenix, New York City, and Denver. We hope to see you at one of our upcoming events! For any inquiries, please refer to our website: https://www.realestateclub.org/contact-1

Last week, the Wisconsin Real Estate Club took 32 students, along with faculty members Gregory Reed and Arif Qureshi, to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the first time ever! On Wednesday, we started with a market overview at CBRE led by Compie Newman, a native Charlottean and enthusiastic booster for this fast-growing city. Compie walked us through the growing neighborhoods in Charlotte, including the South End, which has seen tremendous transit-oriented development along the light rail corridor. Among the new developments popping up in Charlotte's South End is Queensbridge Collective, led by Riverside Investment & Development Company. Thank you to Andrew Cathlina (MSRE 1988) for introducing us to James Anderson (BBA 2009) and Ryan Wilkinson, who gave students a hard-hat tour of the residential tower currently under construction on the site! We stayed in the South End for a networking happy hour at the Olde Mecklenburg Brewery sponsored by WREAA, Inc. and Edward M. Cherry, CFA (MSRE 1984). It was great to see so many alumni there, including Todd Ewen and Bryan Johnson, who came all the way from Raleigh. Greg Reed, Dave Chandler (MSRE 1989), and Steve Smith (MSRE 1988) represented the last class who studied with James Graaskamp in person!

On Friday, the Real Estate Club’s trip to Charlotte was anchored by Bob Moore of VEST Residential, who gave us an overview of how to build a property management company, and Robert Sweeney of RJS Properties, who shared not only his experience in building a company by targeting small properties, but his life story and advice for aligning your career goals and your life goals. Thank you so much to the Bobs, and to Edward M. Cherry, CFA for connecting us with Bob Moore! ? None of this trip would have been possible without the Herculean efforts of Dave Chandler (MSRE 1989), who made so many personal connections and did so much on-the-ground work to ensure we had a positive experience in the Queen City. Thank you, Dave!

Continuing the Real Estate Club’s Charlotte tour: we kicked off Thursday morning with a visit to Wells Fargo, where students had the rare opportunity to hear from four Managing Directors in an informal setting. Thank you to Bird Anderson, Joel Bartis (MBA 2007), Domeica White, and Matthew Kuhn for sharing your experiences, and to Mike Pfaff, CFA (MBA 2008) for setting this visit up! ? After a short bus ride, we were greeted by Christina Argeris Thigpen, APR and Nick Vosnock of the Northwood Office team to walk us through this 535-acre mixed-use development in suburban Charlotte. A huge thanks is due to Brian Cleary (MBA 2019) for facilitating this visit. ? While in Ballantyne, we stopped by the Crescent Communities market-rate NOVEL Ballantyne and Laurel Street Residential mixed-income senior living Balmore at Ballantyne multifamily developments. Thank you Benjamin Collins (BBA 2002) for setting up this visit and to Michael Tubridy and Lee Cochran for giving us the tour of these beautiful properties! ? In the evening, Real Estate Club collaborated with Nicolas Sanchez and Cecilia Herrera from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Commercial Real Estate Society - UNC Charlotte to host an event emphasizing the importance of utilizing professional networking groups. We would like to thank Stuart Proffitt at Urban Land Institute, Brittany Heath and Patty Drummond (Trepp) at CREW Charlotte, and Darrell Palasciano and Aaron Zucker from ICSC for helping us to understand the importance of these organizations as a resource for young professionals, as well as Crescent Communities for sponsoring the event. It was great to connect not only with industry professionals but also with other students interested in commercial real estate!
