Wisconsin Early Childhood Association (WECA)

WECA joined state administrators and advocates at the recent Administrators & Advocates Convening hosted by National Women's Law Center, Center for Law and Social Policy, and National Indian Child Care Association (NICCA) in Virginia in March. Julie and Paula from the WECA Center for Policy, Research and Engagement, Wisconsin representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families, and attendees from across the country spent a week together learning and networking with a focus on early childhood policy goals. We always appreciate great opportunities like this to learn from advocates, policymakers, and leaders from a variety of states to bring ideas back to Wisconsin. The WECA Center for Policy, Research and Engagement prioritizes relationships in the early childhood field to ensure policy priorities positively impact providers, children, families, and communities across Wisconsin as it turns research and data into meaningful action. As a manufacturing CEO shares in collaboration with WECA’s executive director, Wisconsin is at an inflection point. The child care crisis affects parents, employers and communities alike, with profound economic and societal consequences. While businesses are stepping up where they can, this is not a challenge they can solve alone. A sustainable solution demands significant, ongoing state investment. WECA’s work in the latest year ultimately served 90% of the state’s early childhood educators who serve nearly 157,000 young children and their families across the state. That informs daily efforts to provide direct payments to providers, scholarships, reimbursements, and so many other important core programs and services. We have known since our founding that when early educators are supported, young children, their families, and entire communities are better for it. WECA and staff from the Center from Policy, Research and Engagement were pleased to support the UW-Whitewater Children’s Center as it hosted a well-attended recent community roundtable event. Participants heard from a panel, which was followed by roundtable discussions to discuss child care challenges and strategies in the community. Group and family child care providers, families, community leaders, and elected officials came together to engage with decisionmakers about the importance of early care and education. The Children’s Center was inspired to hold the community event after attending a WECA-sponsored community child care forum last fall. NAEYC survey results are out: Burnout and economic insecurity of the early childhood workforce are at an all-time high. The newest workforce study of educators across the U.S. highlights the continued harmful effects of lack of investment into early care and education. In fact, 56% of respondents shared they continue to see programs in their communities close. According to an early educator in Wisconsin, “I have made a difference in the lives of so many children. However, my job is deemed irrelevant and not valuable within our society.
