The University of WI-Madison Division of Extension facilitated a virtual meeting on October 30, 2024 to discuss the transition to using electronic identification (EID) for disease traceability with Gretchen May, DVM, Veterinary Program Manager - Division of Animal Health, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Cattle producers had their questions answered about EID tags and the requirements for using them that went into effect on November 5, 2024. The rule change does not add any new classes of cattle that require official identification; it only changes the eartags that are considered official. Julie Sweney, Executive Director of the WI Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) also discussed how premises registration and official identification aid disease traceability in the event of an animal disease impacting Wisconsin. She shared the importance of keeping livestock premises registration up to date as WLIC begins renewing registrations for 2025. The one-hour recording of this presentation is available at Extension YouTube channel https://lnkd.in/gf9c9PUf For more information about the EID rule being implemented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service visit https://go.wisc.edu/5uyhpz.

?? Important Update: Every five years, the USDA and HHS release new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, shaping everything from school nutrition to healthcare recommendations. The current draft suggests reducing meat consumption, including beef, and replacing it with plant-based proteins like beans, peas, and lentils. ??? The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) has launched a grassroots campaign, urging Congress to protect beef's role in our diets. As these guidelines impact federal policies, now is the time to take action. You can get involved by following the link below to send a letter to Congress and make your voice heard.?
