The head of the #MMAC says a recent 🌥 #airquality classification change for southeastern #Wisconsin is likely the “most significant threat” to the regional #economy, and could drive away companies looking to set up shop in the area. Speaking Friday during an online briefing, METROPOLITAN MILWAUKEE ASSOCIATION OF COMMERCE President Dale Kooyenga said the group is already seeing the consequences of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s classification change. The agency in January changed a regional #ozone nonattainment classification from “moderate” to “serious,” creating new emissions requirements for industry in the region. But the MMAC, chambers of commerce and economic development groups in the state are fighting the change, arguing the vast majority of the #emissions that led to the change are coming from outside of Wisconsin. “We have already had a large deal, with over 400 employees and hundreds of millions of dollars in investment, pull out of our region because of this,” Kooyenga said. “So on the economic development side, we’re already seeing negative consequences of this.” 🗞️ Read the full post at https://lnkd.in/g3py-94f

Indeed Brewing Company is “scrambling” to figure out what kinds of impacts new #steel and aluminum #tariffs will have on the business, including a 🍺 #brewery in Milwaukee. That’s according to Ryan Bandy, the Minneapolis-based company’s chief business officer. In an interview yesterday, he said U.S. #craftbreweries have largely shifted to using #cans instead of #bottles over the past decade or so, estimating 70% of the industry’s product is now sold in #aluminum 🥫 cans. “One of our biggest expenses in a given year is cans, so even going up by a 📈 percent or two, for a lot of us, that’s not necessarily a margin we have, especially mid-sized #manufacturers,” he told WisBusiness.com. “In past times that we’ve seen can prices go up, especially in a quick way … it’s a really hard battle.” ➡️ Read more at https://lnkd.in/gV--d9t9

🏡 Legislation from Republican authors would expand the state’s Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program while requiring more than a third of the credits go toward #rural projects. Rep. David Armstrong, R-Rice Lake and Sen. Romaine Robert Quinn, R-Birchwood, recently began circulating the bill for co-sponsorship. In a memo to other lawmakers, they note #Wisconsin has a #housing crisis as “there simply isn’t enough 🏠 #affordablehousing” to meet demand from working-age #residents. “This in turn hurts, among other things, the ability of Wisconsin #employers to recruit #employees,” they wrote. The #LIHTC program, administered by the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) allocates up to $42 million in income #taxcredits annually. These go to #owners and #investors that develop or rehabilitate low-to-moderate-income 🏘#housing. Under the bill, that amount would increase to $100 million. ▶️ Read more at https://lnkd.in/gHicZeEr

The Wisconsin Technology Council is urging the state’s congressional delegation to push for restoring The National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding and preventing similar cuts from being made elsewhere. After the #NIH on Friday announced cuts to #grants that help cover indirect R&D costs for #medicalresearch institutions, the Tech Council sent a statement to #Wisconsin’s federal lawmakers warning the move will “cause immediate and likely lasting harm” to #biomedical #research in Wisconsin and elsewhere. The group is calling on the delegation to reverse the #funding cut — which caps the indirect cost rate at 15% for NIH grants — and ensure similar cuts aren’t made to other agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF). The #NSF provides funding for #science and #engineering research in all areas except #medical, which is covered by the NIH. Read more at https://lnkd.in/gHFZpJrw

Governor Tony Evers is slamming federal officials for moving to “yank tens of millions of 💰 #investments” in #EV charging in Wisconsin after the U.S. Department of Transportation suspended approval of state #EVinfrastructure plans. The guv’s office on Friday said the #Trump administration is seeking to “retroactively suspend” 🚗 #EVinfrastructure investments in Wisconsin that were previously approved by the U.S. DOT. The state has been submitting plans for using funds under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, got approval for three consecutive fiscal years and had already started announcing grantees and obligating #funds. #Wisconsin was set to receive $78 million in federal funding under the $5 billion #NEVI program and had planned to award $23 million to 53 projects in an initial round of funding. The program was funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. 🔎 Read more at https://lnkd.in/gsntGszs

🎙 This week’s episode of “WisBusiness: the Podcast” is with Roman Gelman, CEO and co-founder of eMBR Genomics. The Madison-based business is developing #liquidbiopsy tests for #cancer and other conditions, “meaning someone can walk into their doctor’s office and from one 🩸 blood draw, be able to determine if they have a number of #cancers or other diseases,” Gelman said. He discusses the company’s focus on “molecular residual disease” to assess the effectiveness of various treatments for cancer or other diseases. The name #eMBRGenomics — pronounced like ember — references mid-body remnants, a leftover #cellular material linked to #cell division. 🎙 Our CEO and co-founder, Roman Gelman, recently spoke on WisBusiness.com: the Podcast about our approach to studying mid-body remnants (MBRs)—a unique cellular structure linked to cell division. These extracellular vesicles is an entirely new class of biomarkers that will drive the next generation of disease screening and tracking therapeutic effectiveness. In the podcast, Roman shares how we’re: ✅ Building biomarker libraries to enable early disease detection ✅ Partnering with leading researchers to translate breakthrough science into real-world diagnostics ✅ Working toward a future where a simple blood draw can provide critical insights into health Our mission? To make early cancer and disease detection more accessible, leveraging mid-body remnants (MBRs)—a powerful biomarker linked to cell division. These structures hold the key to non-invasive, highly sensitive screening for multi cancer early detection and molecular residual disease, helping assess treatment effectiveness and disease progression. Our vision is clear: detecting cancer earlier, improving patient outcomes, and making precision medicine a reality. 🔥 Listen to the full podcast here: https://lnkd.in/guT6Vh8H eMBR Genomics is working toward a future where liquid biopsy technology could provide earlier, less invasive insights into cancer and other diseases through MBRs. #eMBR #TheScienceofMBRs #Biotech #LiquidBiopsy #CancerDetection #MolecularDiagnostics

An AI specialist with the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) predicts models like #ChatGPT will soon hit a plateau, meaning a lot less short-term impact on jobs and society than the hype suggests. Jeremy Kedziora, Ph.D., endowed chair of artificial intelligence at #MSOE, this week addressed members of the Rotary Club of Milwaukee. He explained the “deep learning revolution” that kicked off around 2012 is now running into constraints, which have implications for the future of #AI development. The factors that have driven the explosive growth of AI — particularly large language models, or #LLMs — include greater computing power for less money, advances in the underlying #mathematics and the #internet putting out massive amounts of human-generated information. 🔎 Read more at https://lnkd.in/g8r7inT6

The Dane County area’s 🏡 housing market last year had its “first meaningful increase” in available homes since the #pandemic, even as prices increased slightly more than expected. That’s according to the latest 📘 report from Stark Company Realtors® President and CEO David Stark covering regional market trends for the winter season and 2024 overall. It shows that by year’s end, Dane County had 605 homes on the market 📈 — an increase of 30.7%, while nearby Sauk and Columbia counties collectively had 13.3% more homes on the market.
