A few weeks ago, I wrote about how there is not ONE right answer. And in fact, I like knowing that there is more than ONE right answer This can be a hard concept for high-achieving leaders to accept, but this example may help you get there: Imagine yourself visiting the Grand Canyon. There are many ways to enjoy the view. You can take in the immense landscape as you fly over by helicopter. You can hike to the rim and look out at the depths and ridges. You can hike a mile in any direction and get yet another perspective. You can even choose to raft down the Colorado River and find yourself centered in the canyon’s majestic beauty. Each of these choices represents a different perspective. Each perspective brings new insights. There is no one right view. Rather, there are endless possibilities. Self-aware leaders understand this and can quickly step back to see an alternative perspective. Have you recently taken on a new perspective? How did it feel? One of the most powerful lessons I have learned came from my very first coach. It completely shifted my perspective to see people more positively. He told me that he sees a small yellow post-it note on the forehead of everyone he meets. On it is the number 10. This reminds him to treat everyone as if they were a 10 from the first time he meets them. I have done this? many times with colleagues that I have heard not-so-nice things about. When I meet them, I make sure to get to know them and make my own decision. Over the years, many have become friends. I remember one person in particular. We were in a certificate session together, and yet we didn’t connect. I decided to reach out and ask her opinion on something. We had a good conversation, set up a lunch meeting, and for years now, we have been meeting for lunch regularly. I have learned so much from her - including that we have plenty in common. For the next week, I challenge you to view everyone as a “10.” It may benefit you far more than you realize. #EmotionalIntelligence #LeadershipStrategies #GTownCoach

When I was accepted into the coaching program at Georgetown University, I was thrilled. But I was also weighed down with assumptions about myself and what I could do. As I got closer and closer to the start of the program, I got more and more nervous. I began to question whether I had the ability to excel. The more I let my assumptions get the best of me, the more I second-guessed everything. Even when I was mid-way through the program, I was still struggling with feelings of inadequacy. It didn’t matter that I was a coaching veteran with almost two decades of experience - much more than anyone else in the program. Something had to change, so I challenged my assumptions through positive self-talk. Then, I invited a new perspective, a trusted friend. My friend said to me, “Joan, you are in the program to learn, and just as much as you are learning from others, they have an opportunity to learn from you as well, but only if you give them the chance to do so. It seems to me that you are not speaking up or offering enough.” Though implementing her advice was difficult for me - it really pushed me outside my comfort zone - it significantly changed my perspective and my experience. By challenging my assumptions and inviting a new perspective, I was testing the reality I thought existed and found that it wasn’t exactly right after all. In fact, the assumptions I had made were working against me. It wasn’t until I became more self-aware, had the courage to do the inner work, and committed to personal learning that I excelled and became more confident. This was a valuable lesson learned, so I’d like to challenge you: Pick an assumption that is holding you back. Ask a trusted friend or colleague for their perspective.
