“Girls and women are important for conservation of biodiversity.” This is one of the key takeaways from 2023 WINGS Flag Carrier Dr. Dominique Gon?alves’s recent talk, “Living with Giants: Gorongosa Elephants’ Recovery and Challenges.” Dominique offered a look at the fall and recovery of the elephant population, and its impacts on the social-ecological system of one of the most successful restoration efforts in Africa. Some additional insights she shared: ???By protecting the elephant habitat, conservationists also protect the habitat for many other species.? ???The tuskless gene seen in 2-4% of elephants is an evolutionary response to poaching and an unintended consequence of the ivory trade. ???People who live near elephant populations are a great source of help with longterm solutions to the biggest challenges we face in Human-Elephant Conflict. ???Investing in the education of girls and women is essential to conservation efforts. Gorongosa's Girls Club promotes education and health to prevent early marriage. Learn more about Dominique’s work??? https://lnkd.in/eJrxr9G9

We love hearing directly from our Explorers about the impact WINGS has had on their work and the world. Thank you to Three Otters Media for sharing this video, which includes a peek at the incredible digital environment they built using the stories, experiences, and data from their WINGS-funded Antarctic expedition.
??? It’s our WINGS Flag-a-Versary!! ??? A year ago today, WINGS Women of Discovery awarded ??????three wee otters a beautiful WINGS Flag award. The WINGS Flag represents “excellence in discovery and knowledge” and "certifies the significance of its carrier's endeavor.” ?? To bring this symbol of exploration, courage, and trust with us to Antarctica ???? on our own expedition was a dream come true for me! A decade ago, I was still an unhappy lawyer and I never imagined my life could be filled with penguins and purpose, with adventures and "Adventure Aunties" to have them with. As a bonus, Emilie Welles sent us Flag #32, which is the exact same flag that Three Otters Media (and a bigger team of badass women) met under in 2022, on an orca expedition to Arctic Norway.?We all got to become bi-polar explorers with her! (Yes, the flag is a she, because -- obviously. ????????????) Beyond this great honor, becoming WINGS Women literally changed everything—it rewired my brain ??, filled my heart ??, and reminded me that anything is possible when you find the right women to do it with. ???? So, to our WINGS community:?you inspire us, lift us higher than we ever imagined, and make the impossible feel within reach—thank you. ??? ??Here’s to more adventures, more joy, and more everything is possible moments. #WINGSWomenofDiscovery #WINGSFlagCarrier #ThreeOttersMedia #Antarctica #AnythingIsPossible #Gratitude Dr. Louise Edwards Aya Walraven Meredith Ayan Karen Zieff (she/her) Kathleen O'Leary Jeanine McHugh Blue Green Expeditions Oceanwide Expeditions Sea Women Expeditions Waterproof Expeditions
