“Girls and women are important for conservation of biodiversity.” This is one of the key takeaways from 2023 WINGS Flag Carrier Dr. Dominique Gon?alves’s recent talk, “Living with Giants: Gorongosa Elephants’ Recovery and Challenges.” Dominique offered a look at the fall and recovery of the elephant population, and its impacts on the social-ecological system of one of the most successful restoration efforts in Africa. Some additional insights she shared: ???By protecting the elephant habitat, conservationists also protect the habitat for many other species.? ???The tuskless gene seen in 2-4% of elephants is an evolutionary response to poaching and an unintended consequence of the ivory trade. ???People who live near elephant populations are a great source of help with longterm solutions to the biggest challenges we face in Human-Elephant Conflict. ???Investing in the education of girls and women is essential to conservation efforts.
