?? ATTENTION ALL HIGH ACHIEVERS ?? This is a must read ???????? I learned an interesting and impactful concept that I’d like to share with you. An idea in psychology says that it’s not the past that determines the present, it’s actually who you are in the present that determines the meaning of your past ??. In simple terms, we get to determine the value of our past! As high-achievers, we are always striving for the future and put so much focus there that we tend to devalue our past. Even if our past was really successful and our life as we know it right now is living in a dream from our past, we still tend to devalue it and measure ourselves against where we want to be in the future. So the concept is the gap and the gain thinking - get out of the gap-thinking and stop measuring yourself against the future. Instead, start measuring yourself against where you were before and step into gain-thinking. Recognize how much farther you are now than you were 1 year ago, 3 years ago, 5 years ago, etc. That’s a much more powerful position to be in! It moves you from a place of never feeling successful to, look at all the success I accomplished. You shift your thoughts to the gains you’ve made versus the gaps you have ahead. So which are you going to choose? The gap or the gain-thinking? PS. I’m going with the gain ??, as I reflect over the last few years I have grown, evolved, achieved, and therefore gained a lot. This year has knocked me down several times! As we enter into the holiday season, I always like to take some time to reflect on the year. And if I’m being honest, it’s been quite a year! I’ve been knocked down a few times... ???? Several family health scares and diagnoses ???? My Dad had to have open-heart surgery ?? Had to get rid of our family dog ?? Lost my Uncle ?? Lost my Aunt ?? Lost my job Every time I felt like I was knocked down, I chose to get back up and keep going. Even though it felt really hard. I believe because I didn’t give up, this year was also quite a year that was filled with many beautiful gifts... ?? We got a puppy ?? Made new friendships ?? Built stronger relationships with family ?? Took a 2-week vacation with my family to Croatia ?? Spent some time getting reacquainted with myself ?? Stepped into my dream job - Career Coaching full-time Someone once told me, “Great blessings are a result of great perseverance.” When you feel knocked down in life, get back up and keep moving forward. It’s one thing to list out your goals for the New Year, and it’s another to have a strategy that actually keeps you on the right path to achieving those goals. One powerful strategy is to know your core values. Knowing them will enhance the likelihood of achieving your goals. Because when you know your core values they act as a filter for making decisions and keep you aligned with your true self. Your core values help you to make choices that resonate with your beliefs and principles and help you evaluate opportunities that come your way. They ultimately become a part of your why. Together your why and your values provide you with motivation and resilience. Couple that with goal setting and now you’ve just become unstoppable. ???? ???? Here are 5 questions to help you identify your core values: 1?? Reflect on the past few years, what are some moments that lit you up? Why did they make you so happy? Are there any patterns you see between these moments? 2?? What are 5 of your proudest achievements that happened over the last few years? What is it about them that resonates the most with you? 3?? When was the last time you were in a complete flow state? What were you doing? Were you with anyone? Where were you and what were your surroundings like? 4?? What are 3 things in your life that are truly most important to you? Is it your family, finances, making an impact, continuously learning, having work/life balance, etc.? 5?? What do you really want to be known for? What is the legacy you want to leave behind? How do you want to make people feel when you’re in the room with them, and what would you like people to say about you when you’re not in the room? Now look at your answers and see if there are any themes that you can use to help identify your values. ?? Are there particular words that keep popping up? ?? Are there certain connections between your answers that feel important to you? ?? What are the patterns? Need additional support, check out a core values list and look at the words. Which ones resonate with you based on your answers? The goal is to come up with 5 key core values. When you identify them, you will feel it. Happiness or Serenity? The other day I shared an idea that the power of positive thinking can help shape a happier life. Another valuable perspective was shared with me. One that I deeply appreciate. For some, positive thinking might feel like a daunting task, and the pursuit of happiness may seem like an elusive goal. Instead of embracing positivity, some think about and prepare for the worst outcomes. Does this make them a negative person or hinder their ability to live a happier life? No, I don’t believe so. Instead of striving to achieve happiness, they may be leaning towards seeking serenity. It was explained to me that happiness is almost undefinable, but serenity is the power of believing in yourself and not worrying about things out of your control. According to Oxford Languages, serenity is the state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled, while happiness is the state of being happy. Imagine serenity as the power of self-belief, an ability to navigate life without being consumed by things beyond our control. Is seeking serenity more appealing to you?
