Victoria Nyamadie is a data analyst and the founder of Whisper Health an #AI-driven digital health startup aimed to transform sexual #healthcare and promote early #diagnosis in Ghana. Originally from a non-STEM background in #logistics and #supplychain management, Victoria boldly transitioned into Data Science becoming one of the first two women chosen to undertake her service at a previously male-dominated field. Her journey is a testament that no matter where you start, with #determination and #passion, you can break #barriers and #excel in any field. Driven by a passion for solving real-world challenges, she has developed AI-driven #healthcare solutions that is poised to improve patient care in underserved communities and reduce the stigma attached to sexually related diseases. She continues to inspire others—especially women from non-#STEM backgrounds—to embrace the power of their unique perspectives, pursue their #dreams, and create impactful #change through #innovation. We come your way again with exciting stories on the lives of amazing women contributing immensely in the field of machine learning and DataScience. Our women crush Wednesday for this week is Acapella Quaye. Bet you didn’t guess that. Acapella is a computer science graduate who explored various fields of #IT such as #webdevelopment, #IoT, #databasemanagement, #mobileapp development and #datascience. She worked typically as a mobile app developer and through engagements with startups she discovered her enthusiasm for business and entrepreneurship. Acapella pursued an MBA to gain more insights in business development which helped her to finally unearth her deep quest in using data to answer and navigate daunting business questions to make informed decisions. She henceforth pursued the path of data analysis. However her desire to make predictions in uncertain times and her love for coding engineered her path into machine learning. Acapella is a self taught programmer, she is able to easily understand concepts and work on projects. She is currently the VP of learning at Prodigee where she uses student learning patterns and engagement to recommend and structure #curriculums and #bootcamps in tech courses. She is privileged to handle some data analysis and data science training for students of Prodigee as well as work on freelance projects. Catherine is an experienced #datascientist with over 7 years of experience. Her passion lies in not only uncovering business-critical insights through data science but also building impactful products that stem from those insights. She has a Master's in Machine Intelligence from the prestigious African Masters in Machine Intelligence program and has a keen interest in #NLP research, specifically for African languages. Sokhar is a researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, currently serving as a lecturer at Dakar American University of Science and Technology (DAUST). She is recognized for her significant contributions to #AI research and #education, particularly in the integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) in #robotics for robot collaboration. Her work explores how advanced AI models can enhance the capabilities and coordination of robotic systems. As a co-founder of WeInnove , Sokhar is dedicated to #STEM education and school equipment, encouraging children to pursue interests in scientific and technological fields. She also co-founded Women Promoting Science to the Younger Generation, an initiative aimed at inspiring and supporting young women to engage in science. Additionally, she is a co-organizer of WiMLDS Dakar where she actively promotes diversity in the tech community by organizing events for Women in Machine Learning and Data Science. Sokhar serves as a role model for young women, demonstrating through her own journey the possibilities and successes achievable in the technology sector. She is passionate about #innovation and #education. Sokhar Samb envisions creating an inclusive ecosystem where technology and gender equality are central to social and economic progress. Her commitment to training and developing technological infrastructure in schools reflects her vision of a future where every child has access to quality STEM education. She won the top 35 Most Influential Women In Tech, Africa, cioafrica 2021. About a month ago, ?I was privileged to attend the Ghana Data Science Summit (IndabaX Ghana) 2024, themed "Unleashing the Potential of AI through Grassroot Engagement at the Great Hall, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi. Day 1 began with Prof. John Jerry Kponyo's presentation on "Responsible AI and Inclusivity," where he emphasized the critical role of including all stakeholders in developing AI-driven solutions. Hilda Barasa of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change also highlighted how by leveraging AI, African governments can address local needs more effectively and create more responsive and transparent public service systems. On day 2, I attended a workshop conducted by Wimlds Accra (Women in Machine Learning and Data Science Accra chapter) Dr. Rosemary Gyening, the keynote speaker emphasized the use of AI for social good. A panel discussion on mentorship was held to underscore the importance of having a mentor in one's field. I also gained insights into how a mentor can provide guidance and support and how participating in a mentorship program offers valuable networking opportunities, career growth, and personal development. Day 3 centered on industry and networking, with presentations from various organizations demonstrating the practical applications of AI across different domains. The summit has been a game-changer for me, providing clear direction and renewed motivation for pursuing a career in Data Science and AI/ML. I’m excited to use these insights to explore AI’s impact on social issues.
