The oldest and largest civic organization in Southeastern North Carolina, the Wilmington Rotary Club was founded in 1915, the 150th club in the Rotary movement. It is the parent (or grandparent) to numerous other Rotary clubs in eastern North Carolina. The Wilmington club is one of six in Wilmington proper, and is part of District 7730. The club meets for lunch on Tuesdays, starting at 12:30 p.m. in The Upper Room in the Tileston Building at St. Mary School in Wilmington's Historic District. The club has a tax-exempt Section 501-c-3 foundation, The RCDW Foundation, to which deductible contributions may be made. The club celebrated its Centennial in 2015. Current activities include the Legacy project, a partnership with Wilmington’s Williston Middle School; child literacy through the Williston Middle School, D.C. Virgo Academy, and six of New Hanover County’s public elementary schools; a rural health clinic in Honduras, the Tegucigalpa, Honduras Rotary Club and several other Wilmington-area clubs; a Habitat for Humanity House; assistance to the Rotary Cottage at the N.C. Boys and Girls Homes at Lake Waccamaw; support for the Rotary Wheel Garden at Wilmington’s Greenfield Park; and numerous other grants and service projects. The club's annual fund-raiser is the Leaders in Service Awards banquet held every May, which honors executives of local organizations who are making a difference in the greater Wilmington community. "Service Above Self" is Rotary's motto.
