Our Career and Leadership Development Academy (CLDA) has been a huge success so far! Natalie English, president & CEO of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, and Laura Brogdon-Primavera, VP of Leadership Development, were in Greensboro, NC for the North Carolina School Board Association Conference earlier this week. Natalie and Laura, alongside New Hanover County Schools board members and administration, spoke about the Career and Leadership Development Academy. The primary goals of the CLDA are to develop and retain young workers, showcase fast-growing career pathways in the community, build leadership and employability skills, and prioritize the development of durable skills as outlined in NC DPI's The North Carolina Portrait of a Graduate. The ten-month program allows 7th-grade students to explore local career clusters, identify their top career choices, experience various job roles, and present their findings to their peers.

It’s been a busy few weeks for our Career and Leadership Development Academy (CLDA) students, so let’s recap! New Hanover County Schools 7th graders took trips to Clancy & Theys, Frontier, Alcami, LS3P, Monteith, Approve, AvanceCare, Old Dominion, Carolina Bay—Autumn Hall, UNCW, Jengo’s Playhouse, Modern Aviation, Grover Gaming, Wilmington Grill, Rulmeca and CFCC. One student said: "This is fun, I didn't even know I liked Science!" And that’s why these trips are so important! This CLDA program helps students build essential skills like communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. These skills are valuable not just for school but for future jobs. It also gives them a better understanding of different careers and helps them make informed choices about what they might want to pursue later. Developing leadership abilities early on boosts their confidence, encourages responsibility, and teaches them how to work well with others—skills that will be useful throughout their lives. Thank you to all of our partners for making these experiences possible!
