Building in Bethesda: Wilmer's Bethesda satellite clinic Bethesda opened in February 2013. Back then, seven clinicians practiced in the 7,500 square foot office. Since its relocation and development in 2019, the new facility boasts 18,000 square feet of clinic space, which includes 28 exams rooms, two procedure rooms, an optical shop and a cosmetic suite. Today, the number of doctors practicing at Bethesda has more than doubled. ? "We offer the full spectrum of specialized eye care services: cataracts, cornea, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics, optometry, pediatrics and retina," says?Joseph Anaya, M.D., M.B.A., who became clinic director for the satellite last year. "We’re proud to be able to serve the community in such a comprehensive way.”

From the Battlefield to the Boardroom: William Holland Wilmer, M.D. was the first chairman of the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute. Wilmer, a former physician in the first World War, was known for his clinical and surgical expertise, pedagogical prowess and patient care. On Feb. 11, 1925, Wilmer was endorsed by the Advisory Board to the Trustees of The Johns Hopkins University for appointment as Professor of Ophthalmology, and it was further recommended to the Medical Board of The Johns Hopkins Hospital that he be designated chief ophthalmologist. Two days later, Wilmer’s appointment was approved by both the university and the hospital.
