Veterans Day, originally Armistice Day, is observed every November 11 symbolizing the 11th hour on the 11th day in the 11th month of 1918 that signaled the end of World War I. In honor of Veterans Day, we turn to the pages of history with the Patriot Burials marker program in partnership with state societies of the Sons of the American Revolution. Patriot Burials recognizes Revolutionary War veterans and those who were involved with the struggle for American independence. To veterans everywhere, thank you—today, and every day—for your service.

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate the contributions, inspiring stories and history makers of Indigenous communities. Today’s feature turns to the history of Mooningwaanikaaning, the homeland of the Ojibwe people. Mooningwaanikaaning is the Ojibwe name for northern Wisconsin's Madeline Island and means “home of the yellow-breasted flicker bird.” A Wisconsin marker for Mooningwaanikaaning and the Anishinaabeg migration story was unveiled during a 2023 commemoration led by the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Madeline Island Museum and our state partner the Wisconsin Historical Society.
