Do Wildlife Deterrents Work on Mountain Lions? Interrupting an initial pursuit can sometimes be enough to convince a mountain lion to move on. However, when the attraction is too great and the lion is persistent, the effectiveness of deterrents often wears off. Securing domestic animals in an enclosure at night and reducing the visibility of livestock to a passing lion are still the best approaches but may not always be feasible. The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Wildlife Health Center is testing wildlife deterrents and attempting to design more effective devices to help protect mountain lions and livestock. She is feeding on a bait we set out on a conservation property owned by the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency, and the data collected from her collar will support the planning of the Habitat Agency's Pacheco Pass Wildlife Crossing Project. A Mountain Lion, A Horse & A Mouse We recorded this trio while monitoring a livestock pen in Central California. The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Wildlife Health Center captured and collared the lion in association with a goat depredation event. The lion moved out of the area after we helped the landowner reinforce his goat pen. The horse in this video is outside the corral, while the mountain lion and two other horses are inside. The lion returned to the area hoping to access the goat pen and showed no interest in the horses. Although not always feasible, housing goats in a secure pen at night can dramatically reduce wildlife conflicts. Destroying the lion or translocating it does not solve the problem. 4 Mountain Lions Feeding on a Bait The little sister goes to get mom because her two brothers won't let her feed. Mom arrives and asserts dominance over the bait, allowing the female kitten to eat. A while later, one of the young males, now with a full belly, steps away to digest and rest. Unfortunately, F337, the collared adult female and mother in this video, was hit and killed by a vehicle on Highway 152 (Pacheco Pass) a few weeks after this scene was recorded. The Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency?is leading efforts to construct a wildlife overpass in the area, and we are working with the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Wildlife Health Center to capture and GPS-collar mountain lions. Genetic samples collected during each capture, and the collar data will help support lion conservation efforts in Pacheco Pass and statewide. Mountain Lion Investigates a Culvert While monitoring wildlife along the Pacheco Pass, we detected this mountain lion investigating a culvert that crosses the SR-152 Highway. Data from our monitoring efforts will support the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency's efforts to construct a wildlife overpass and improve wildlife accessibility to existing bridges and culverts. We are also working with the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (Wildlife Health Center) to capture and GPS-collar mountain lions in the area. Feral Piglet Falls 25+ Feet Our trail camera was set up to monitor wildlife using a culvert along the Pacheco Pass and captured this piglet falling more than 25 feet from the highway above. The Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency is currently leading efforts to construct a wildlife crossing in the area and fencing that will help funnel wildlife safely through existing culverts and bridges. The proposed infrastructure will also help protect motorists by keeping wildlife and feral pigs off of the highway. California Mountain Lions in the Oaks We detected this mountain lion mama and her two kittens playing in the oaks on a conservation property owned by the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency.
