Exciting news: Destructive illegal fishing around Costa Rica’s Cocos Island—which famously inspired Jurassic Park—has PLUMMETED. Cocos Island National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 54,844 square kilometers—slightly larger than the entire land area of Costa Rica and roughly twice the size of Vermont—is a critical sanctuary for iconic species like hammerhead sharks, giant manta rays, and whale sharks. Despite its protected status, this biodiversity hotspot has long been targeted by illegal fishers—until now. Recent data tells a story of hope and progress. Earlier this year, we released the pangolin conservation documentary “Defenders of the Hidden”. Starring Wang Yibo, this two-part docuseries offers a comprehensive and firsthand look at the threats to critically endangered Chinese pangolins, along with the rescue and protection work from both Chinese officials and civilians. In its first 2 weeks on Youku—China’s top streaming platform—the film ranked as the #1 documentary and the #2 title overall, and Youku revealed it was the most-watched documentary on its platform in the past 3 years! Ahead of the docuseries premiere, we launched the 'Light up Hope for Pangolins' campaign to spotlight ongoing efforts to conserve Chinese pangolins and to share why there’s hope for their recovery. This campaign included a video PSA, social media outreach, over 475,000 billboard and electronic screen displays across 200 cities, and messages on 200,000 airline tickets. Thank you to everyone who watched, shared, and supported this campaign! This shared commitment fuels lasting change—from reducing demand for pangolin products to empowering communities to protect these remarkable animals. ?? Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eYKr4-Wt

Ghost nets are silent killers. Every year, over 640,000 tons of abandoned fishing gear—10% of all plastic waste in the ocean—becomes ghost nets, drifting through marine habitats and entangling marine life, from turtles to seabirds to sharks. To shed light on this issue, we’re thrilled to launch "No Net Left Behind", a new docuseries created in collaboration with Condé Nast Traveler and Youku. The 4-part series features WildAid ambassador and actor Huang Xuan and ocean advocate and Olympian Zhang Yufei as they explore the problem of ghost nets and the innovative recycling efforts turning this waste into wearable garments. Together, they show how a community-driven approach can transform ghost nets into solutions, sparking hope for a cleaner, healthier ocean. With partnerships across environmental groups, local organizations, and industry leaders, we're aiming to tackle ghost nets head-on. Our goal? A 50% reduction in ghost nets along China’s coast within the next decade. Learn more and watch "No Net Left Behind" here: https://lnkd.in/e4g9w4NA

Meet Jennifer Biffot, WildAid’s Francophone Africa Representative, who is committed to balancing tradition with sustainability. Growing up in Gabon, Jennifer developed a deep appreciation for her homeland’s rich landscapes and cultural heritage. Now, based in Cameroon, she works to protect pangolins and reduce their consumption while preserving Central Africa’s vibrant traditions. “If pangolins disappear, part of Cameroon’s [natural] heritage will disappear as well,” said Jennifer, “then we lose the whole story of the country, the whole identity.” Dive into Jennifer's inspiring story: https://lnkd.in/gJ5wecse

In partnership with local organizations, our team in Ecuador recently launched a new campaign to combat wildlife trafficking and raise awareness about the urgent need to protect Ecuador’s incredible biodiversity. Together with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition and a coalition of dedicated institutions, we’re working to curb illegal wildlife trafficking in El Oro province—an area vulnerable to cross-border trade. With activities spanning environmental education, public outreach, and training sessions for customs and border authorities, the campaign informs citizens on the impact of wildlife trafficking on species like parrots, turtles, and native orchids, as well as the physical and behavioral toll on animals kept as pets. By reaching youth, communities, and tourists, our goal is to shift attitudes toward wildlife protection and foster a culture of respect for Ecuador’s unique natural heritage. ??
