"The Big Dark" by Jack Reis is a compelling narrative that immerses readers in the Pacific Northwest's winter landscape, known for its persistent grayness and rain. Reis eloquently describes how this environment becomes a backdrop for the annual migration of steelhead, whose silvery presence contrasts with the dark surroundings. The essay delves into Jack's connection to these rivers and fish, portraying winter steelheading as a pilgrimage transcending mere fishing. Reis's vivid imagery and introspective reflections offer a profound appreciation for the natural world and the timeless rituals that bind individuals to it. This piece will resonate with seasoned anglers and those who cherish the deep ties between nature and personal experience. https://lnkd.in/gubmcx9r

For those of you who missed last week's Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) second virtual town hall meeting on the 2024-25 coastal steelhead season. WDFW staff shared agreed-to fishery plans with the public during the meeting. In late November, the Department will finalize those plans with tribal co-managers and announce the 2024-2025 season and regulations. https://lnkd.in/g3t-sdpV

The Status Review is public. We have just begun reviewing it, but here are some key findings. ? ???? ??????????????:? ? "The Olympic Peninsula Steelhead SRT concluded that the Distinct Population Segment (DPS) was at moderate risk of extinction throughout its range. The team also reviewed potentially significant portions of the DPS, identified a Significant Portion of Range based on run timing and biogeography, and concluded that none of the significant portions was at a higher risk of extinction than the DPS and, therefore, no change in risk status was prescribed."? The Bottom Line? The Status Review Team's final conclusion was that the Olympic Peninsula Steelhead Distinct population segment is at moderate risk of extinction. https://lnkd.in/g8fRzjJw

For steelheaders of this era, there is no doubt we have reached a major juncture. in the journey. One option is to surrender to the grim circumstances. We can go out in a blaze of glory, Thelma and Louise style, and fish our way to extinction and then move on to other species once wild steelhead are gone. The other fork in the road is to fight and build a robust army of steelhead champions who work as hard to restore wild steelhead as they do to catch them.
