We work to ensure every person has the tools to sustain, promote, and pass their languages on to the next generation.

关于我们

Join our mailing list: https://eepurl.com/gr-ZQH Wikitongues champions language diversity and downstream social justice movements by safeguarding endangered languages, increasing global access to critical linguistic resources, and directly supporting language revitalization projects. The marginalizing forces of nationalism and colonization have pushed cultural diversity to the brink of collapse. 7,000 languages are spoken and signed today, but as many as 3,000 languages could disappear in 80 years. Since the 1980s, world governments have rolled back forced assimilation policies, making it possible for people around the world to reawaken ancestral languages and rebuild their cultures — and when people have the resources to keep their languages alive, they do. However, vital support for language revitalization projects remains scarce and, as a result, the rate of language extinction far outpaces the growing movement to stem its tide. Our task is to build the social infrastructure to meet the scale of this crisis: how can we make it possible for all people to keep their language and culture alive, regardless of their level of external support?

Ever so often I take a step back and just look at what we’ve been up to at Wikitongues and today was just one of those days. I’ll get back to talking about product led improvements to the archive, but for right now I want to celebrate all of the over 40 different revitalization fellowships we’ve supported over the last few years. With projects covering areas as diverse as Art & Performance, Bio-cultural Knowledge, Community Engagement, Cultural Preservation, Documentation, Education, Lexicography, Linguistics Research, Literature, Technology Tools, and Wikimedia, and in no fewer than 43 distinct language communities around the world, these people’s efforts impact the lives of literally tens of millions of people who now have more robust access to their cultural heritage. Imagine trying to text your friends and family but the letters you need to type are not available to you. Mahuton developed a solution for his language of 2.3 million speakers. Each of these projects is as mind blowing as the next. Another project, led by Benson, compiled the first dictionary of Taivoan - the ancestral language of Taiwan - that reflects all four subgroups. Due to political reasons, it has been difficult for the Taivoan language to gain resources for revival; and so, with this first Taivoan dictionary, Benson and his team hope to open the doors for more people to reclaim their heritage language. Go take a peep at the amazing work these people are doing and support their work while you’re at it!

Wikitongues has a new search bar! But first! Last week we looked at Analytics and Baselines. Today, let’s talk about Conversions and how we're enhancing engagement on Wikitongues.org. Wikitongues.org has both a marketing function where people can learn about the organization, and also hosts the Archive - a unique product where people can explore thousands of wonderful videos and data from around the world. Our goal? To turn user visits into meaningful engagements that increase time spent on the site. Conversions are critical here—sessions where users navigate through funnels that drive deeper engagement. That's a mouthful. Let’s break it down. - Sessions are how analytics track user visits. They have a start and an end, and contain all the analytics from that user that were captured during that visit. - Funnels are defined event paths guiding users toward specific actions. - Conversion is the percentage of users completing the desired actions. - Meaningfulness is a characteristic of the funnel - one can define funnels for whatever purpose. For Wikitongues, we want our engagements to be productive. This means identifying core behaviors people want to accomplish and ensuring they are able to do so. There’s a lot more to say in terms of understanding what kinds of tasks and behaviors are productive for our visitors, but for right now, we're focused on discovery within our Archive. Here are a few things we’re doing: - Promote suggested content for people to get started with - Make search rich and interactive so people can get feedback as they search - Surface related content for people to continue browsing Today, it’s all about the search experience. We started with basic WordPress search capabilities, but our domain poses unique challenges. With so many languages in our archive, expecting users to know them by name is unrealistic. We needed a solution that encourages exploration. So, we revamped our search to be more intuitive and interactive. It invites you in with some commonly known examples along with other smaller languages - Turkish, Loko, and Kota for instance - and as you type, you get real-time suggestions and feedback—this is the kind of experience we’re building. The result? Our analytics show a significant improvement: Average time on site has increased by 213% month over month—from 26 seconds to 1 minute and 23 seconds. ?? Stay tuned as we continue to evolve and optimize! Do you have any ideas you’d like to see explored on the Archive? Let me know! #ProductLeadership #UXDesign #Analytics #Engagement #Wikitongues #ContinuousImprovement

Congratulations to the Wayuu community for winning newcomer of the year! Their user group has worked hard over the past year to create a Wikipedia edition in their language, adding over 500 articles. Leonardi encourages over language communities to add their language, emphasizing that technology does not have to be a barrier. If you’re interested in adding your language to Wikipedia, send us a message so that we can help you get started!
