Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.
关于我们
About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

While AI's capabilities are growing rapidly, people remain the trustworthy creators of the world's knowledge. AI is a tool that can be helpful when creating knowledge. But humans can do things that AI cannot – on Wikimedia projects, these tasks include fact-checking, referencing text that exists offline, and more. To date, every large language model has been trained on Wikipedia content, which is created and verified by hundreds of thousands of volunteers. While AI can help, human editors review, improve, and audit the work. They also create policies and structures to govern machine learning tools. Discover why human-led knowledge creation will retain its value in the age of generative AI ?? https://lnkd.in/du_AgYEv

What does this nebula look like to you? Wikimedia Commons is a free media repository that hosts millions of images, videos, and sounds, all shared openly for anyone to use. Every day, a user-submitted Picture of the Day is chosen by contributors from the worldwide Wikimedia Commons community. Today's Picture of the Day depicts NGC 281, a bright emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia, at a distance of 9,200 lightyears from the solar system. In just one month, the WikiForMotherTongue campaign added 618 new Congolese-language articles to Wikipedia. ???? The campaign launched virtually on 1 February as part of Mother-Tongue Contribution Month, and, for the first time, concluded with in-person events in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), later in the month. These events, which were held at Silikin Village, celebrated mother languages and focused on further expanding local language content and documentation of Congolese culture. Journalists, university professors, students, linguists, and cultural operators participated and discussed the importance of open, multilingual projects to diversify knowledge. Many of the campaign’s memorable moments were captured in photos showcasing DRC’s cultural and linguistic richness. Mention of the event’s original name – Wiki na mon?k? mua bÃsó (Wiki in our language) – fostered a sense of belonging and reinforced the importance of the initiative, which concluded with a closing event that was held at the legendary Studio Léo of the Boboto Cultural Center, the oldest cultural center in DRC. In total, 2,400 Wikipedia edits were made during Mother-Tongue Contribution Month, and emerging Congolese Wikipedias (Lnwiki, Kgwiki, and Luawiki) have seen significant growth over the past year. Showcasing the power of community and passion for shared knowledge, WikiArabia in Muscat, Oman, brought Wikimedians together for a successful and inspiring gathering. ???? Held in October 2024, the three-day conference welcomed 250 participants from 20 countries and focused on nurturing new and experienced contributors, expanding collaborations, and celebrating the Arabic language and cultures of the Middle East and North Africa. In total, there were 56 sessions and talks. An edit-a-thon organized by Wikimedia UAE and members from Arabic Wikipedia aimed to train new users and improve the quality and quantity of Arabic language articles. Nearly 45 participants published 489 Wikipedia articles, 20 of which focused on Omani content. Networking and other informal interactions further fostered relationships between attendees – including a “Let’s Connect†session in which participants provided a glimpse into their diverse culinary traditions by sharing traditional sweets from their hometowns. ?? The internet shapes whose stories are heard and whose are overlooked. But digital spaces can evolve to be more inclusive and representative. ART+FEMINISM is a nonprofit organization that is committed to closing information gaps related to gender, feminism, and the arts through organizing in-person training and editing events on Wikipedia. Art+Feminism’s 2025 campaign asks: What would a truly feminist internet look like? One where knowledge is built by and for everyone. Where digital spaces expand representation rather than limit it. Participants will work together to complete a list of tasks created by the Art+Feminism leadership team. These tasks highlight artists, concepts, and social movements that may move us closer to an internet that amplifies marginalized voices. ?? Virtual editing events and community goals run throughout 2025-2026. Read more and be part of the conversation ?? https://w.wiki/DTiH
