#CICM celebrates the many opportunities available in the construction industry, and we are wrapping up this annual celebration by featuring another of our talented team members who is celebrating his 12-year anniversary with Wier, Frank Rodriguez. Frank joined the Wier team as an experienced professional, having supervised the construction of a variety of commercial buildings over his 27-year career. As a superintendent, Frank spends most of his time “reviewing the current work in progress and forecasting the day's completed tasks with respect to what needs to happen tomorrow, next week, and the week after that — always looking ahead.” And, while he admits that this daily procedure is “very time-consuming,” Frank has “met many interesting people” in his role as field superintendent. In fact, his natural rapport with people— “whether they are a laborer, crew leader, business owner, architect, or engineer”—is what has contributed to his longevity in the industry. In addition to having good people skills, “having a strong understanding of how to decipher blueprints” is equally important. Frank thinks that infrastructure construction is likely an important area for growth in the short-term. He also notes that technology advances are making the construction process more efficient. Frank recounted his excitement during the Ron Hoover RV and Marine project, which was “the first time [he’d] seen a detention pond get created without driving a single surveying lath stake in place” because of GPS technology. Careers in Construction Month (#CCIM) was designed to inspire the next generation of professionals by promoting careers in the construction industry, including highlighting specific job opportunities with potential for career growth. To this end, we are pleased to feature Patrick Virgin, Assistant Project Manager (APM) at Wier. Patrick joined the Wier team two years ago as a project estimator and was promoted to his current role as an APM six months later. Patrick said that his “previous role as an estimator really helped shape [his] organizational skills and gave [him] an understanding of the full scope of the work” that the Wier team does every day on behalf of our clients. Patrick encourages anyone who may be considering a career in construction to also begin his or her journey as a project estimator because the role creates invaluable opportunities to “learn about many different types of construction, as well as the industry as a whole,” which can then help to narrow the path toward a specific job and also help with future career advancement. Now, as an APM, Patrick enjoys the day-to-day operations of managing a project schedule, including “interacting with clients, subcontractors, and the rest of the talented Wier team who continue to prove why our clients choose to build with us.” At Wier, we are dedicated to creating long-term relationships. Careers in Construction Month (#CICM) is a nationwide campaign held every October to increase awareness about construction careers. Wier is kicking off this annual celebration by featuring one of our newest employees, Jose Bogran. With just over three months of service at #Wier, Jose came to us from another company primarily focused on the healthcare industry. However, since Wier operates in a variety of industry sectors, Jose is excited that he will be able to expand his knowledge in “ground up commercial construction and have a deeper understanding of all the different trades.” In his role as project estimator, Jose says he enjoys “being able to read the plans and define piece by piece what the scope of work is and how it will be performed.” In fact, Jose was elated to be a part of the team that helped win the bid for Principle Volvo in San Antonio—his very first project at Wier. Jose credits his attention to detail and organizational skills as keys to success on the job. Jose advises others considering an estimating position to be aware that “there is a ton of information quite literally flying [at you] at times, so it takes someone who’s on top of it.” Of course, having teammates who are always “willing to answer a question or lend a hand” makes the work easier and more rewarding.
