This weekend WiCell had the great pleasure of hosting a workshop with students of the Masters of Science in Biotechnology Program through UW-Madison. These students, currently enrolled in the Molecular Technologies 3 Class at UW-Madison, got hands-on experience with their own plate of cells. Through the guidance of WiCell staff, students were able to able learn how to culture, feed, and passage cells. In addition, they were able to learn about current advancement in the stem cell fields and different characterization assays we do here at WiCell! We would like to extend a big thank you to Gustavo Velazquez at Madison Area Technical College for providing access to their excellent teaching lab and the M.S. in Biotechnology Program, UW-Madison for making this collaboration possible!

Director of the WiCell Stem Cell Bank, Dr. Tenneille Ludwig, has been engaging in discussions and sharing insights with the global stem cell community in Beijing this week for the Pluripotent Stem Cell Conference 2024 (PSConf 2024). We’re always excited to see her dedication to advancing stem cell science and her contributions to fostering collaboration and innovation at these key meetings. Shown in the small group photo are (from left to right): Fanyi Zeng (Secretary-general, ISCF; Vice president, CSSCR), Tenneille Ludwig (Director, WiCell Stem Cell Bank), Glyn Stacey (Head for ISCBI), and Xiuwu Bian (President, CSSCR).

Always delighted to be a part of the amazing research being done by the talented researchers at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health!
Holger A. Russ chaired a session at the 2024 International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association Stem Cell Derived Islets Summit in Boston on October 29th, where I spoke about our UW School of Medicine and Public Health program in stem cell immune evasiveness for diabetes therapy. In collaboration with Jon Odorico, Connie S Chamberlain, Matthew Brown and Amar Yeware, we are further advancing to clinic the use of a novel PDL1/IDO synthetic gene initially first-authored by Pradyut K Paul, Ph.D. in American Journal of Transplantation [PMCID:?PMC9804298] now US patent pending and assigned to Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF).?With grant and entrepreneurial coaching support from Harrington Discovery Institute at University Hospitals and the Dr. Ralph and Marian Falk Medical Research Trust, we are striving to develop WiCell provided, GMP-sourced human ES cells as an off-the-shelf source of immune evasive islet-like cells for a cure to T1D.?The University of Wisconsin-Madison Wisconsin Idea to reduce to practice academic innovation into practical cures motivates our efforts to discovery, develop and deploy commercially viable, scalable cell therapy remedies.

WiCell was thrilled to welcome members of the stem cell working consortium from the Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (EKS-IDDRCs) funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver?National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). The tour was organized by WiCell board member Anita Bhattacharyya. It was great to talk with the group and answer questions about how WiCell can support their teams' ongoing research through our stem cell lines and services and give them a brief tour of the WiCell facilities.

Happy Pluripotency Day!!! October 4th, celebrated as Pluripotency Day in the stem cell world because of the famous "Oct-4" gene, is all about honoring the incredible potential of stem cells. Calling it Pluripotency Day is a bit of a misnomer since technically Oct-4 is more about maintaining an undifferentiated state—keeping stem cells in that flexible, ready-to-specialize mode—but “Markers of the Undifferentiated State Day” doesn’t quite roll off the tongue as well. To clear up any confusion (and discuss why precision in terminology matters), we’ve written a new blog that breaks down the subtle, but important, difference between pluripotency and the undifferentiated status. Check out the blog and join the celebration of stem cells and all things pluripotent (or undifferentiated)! https://hubs.la/Q02Scj_h0

Check out the latest edition of Stem Cell Reports from the International Society for Stem Cell Research for the article, "Guidelines for managing and using the digital phenotypes of pluripotent stem cell lines." WiCell's Tenneille Ludwig was a co-author on this paper by Christine Wells, et al., discussing an important topic in the stem cell community— the complexities of stem cell line registration. https://lnkd.in/gVfUK_Uq
