So we did a thing this weekend.
We landed in Chicago on Friday at 7am. Immediately jumped in a rental and drove to Gary, Indiana. Found an amazing restaurant, J’s Breakfast Club, to grab breakfast. Then we drove around and explored the city for a bit.
Then we headed back to Chicago to check out the Navy Pier to explore some urban planning ideas.
Next, we drove to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to see if we could find a bookstore to connect with, to get Dr. Kamshia Childs’s debut children’s book, “I Am More Than My Name” on the bookshelf. We found Boswell Book Company, and had a great opportunity to talk with an amazing employee Ollie. Ollie was extremely helpful and also gave us some great information for our publishing company EdWhys Publishing. We hope to be back to do storytime and author signing in store and in a few schools in Milwaukee.
We grabbed a late-lunch at BEANS & BARLEY, INC. recommended Ollie. Then we drove around and checked out some of the real estate and development going on in the city.
Then we headed back to Schaumburg, Illinois, and checked into the Marriott Hotels Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel. This is a beautiful hotel and has a lot of great amenities nearby.
The real reason we went to Chicago, took place on Saturday. Da Book Joint hosted Dr. Kamshia Childs, for her first ever storytime and author signing event. It was a great success, as the children loved the book, they were excited and engaged. We love what Da Book Joint is doing in Chicago, and the amentity they are providing. They have a big sell going on right now, so if you are in Chicago you should stop by and check them out and the other shops in Boxville Marketplace. Check out their IG for more information.
After the storytime and book signing, we stopped by Burst Into Books, to meet Jurema Gorham, M.Ed., and the Banned Books events she was hosting. We loved Burst Into Books, and all of the resources and vibes they are providing to the community. We will definitely be back to Chicago to do another storytime and book signing at Burst Into Books.
Please reach out if you would like to see us in your city at a local bookstore, library, and/or community organization event.
