In honor of World Fisher’s Day, WhyHunger’s Co-Director of Global Movement Programs, Betty Fermin, joined the Youth Assembly in Brazil to stand in solidarity with fisherfolk from 27 countries and partners from the Caribbean Network of Fisherfolk Organizations (representing 17 countries). From St. Vincent’s Winsbert, who thanked WhyHunger for our support during Hurricane Beryl, to Nadine from Belize, a trailblazer for women’s rights and food sovereignty, the gathering highlighted the urgent need for stronger visibility, representation, and access to resources for fisherfolk globally. Panels addressed challenges like biodiversity disruption, health service gaps, criminalization of women leaders, and mobilizing for food sovereignty, all building toward the 2025 Nyéléni Global Gathering in India.
