At the “Harkin on Wellness” symposium April 3 at Drake U, our colleagues will describe how Whole Health Learning practices can offset kids’ mental duress: in the teaching kitchen (Wellness in the Schools co-founder Nancy Easton); in mindful practices (Inner Explorer co-founder Laura Bakosh); in school gardens (Waukee Iowa Schools coordinator Kaitlyn Scheurmann); and in rapidly greening school grounds (Children & Nature Network Green Schoolyards Director Priya Cook). We are excited to announce that SB 1091 was recently introduced to the CA state legislature by Senator Menjivar. This bill will reduce a significant barrier to school-ground greening, and make it possible for many public schools, especially the ones with less resources, to implement school ground greening projects. Welcome to WholeHealthED! It's taken us some time to get here, but we're happy now to share our work and activities developed since our inaugural workshop at Georgetown University in DC in 2018. Our objective has been and remains to introduce educators, child health advocates, and community leaders to the unique qualities of activities that have been developed since at least 2000 on thousands of US K-12 campuses. The school garden, teaching kitchen, mindful practices, nature and environmental ed, and cognition-bolstering physical activities are moving out of traditional roles as "nice-to-have" ancillary activities to "essential-to-provide" learning experiences that can be shown to mitigate stress, anxiety and the mental duress so pervasive in the wake of COVID. We'll be reporting on our work here and will be happy to field inquiries and questions.
