Whew! On August 1st, WE did a little something! After three months of canvassing, calling, texting, forum hopping, LISTENING...canvassing, calling, texting, LISTENING, etc., I was elected as the District 2 Memphis Shelby County School Board representative! No small feat! Many folks I called for support wished me "luck" given I was running against an incumbent who happened to be the chair of the Board as well. Truthfully, that hadn't really dawned on me. What I knew was that we needed representation focused on students...in a transparent and accountable way! Again, my focus was on students. Period. I can't begin to say enough about ALL the people who believed in me, worked with and supported me! Anyone who knows me, knows running for an office has never been on my radar. I've always seen myself as a "behind the scenes", only in front when necessary, truth-teller and dedicated advocate for youth, social, economic and education justice! What I'm most proud of, however, is how our son, Chioke, stepped-up and fully into leading our ground game!! He recruited many of his friends he grew up with, from pre-school through high school; friends he shuffled through our (their second) house who had no problems knocking on doors and making phone calls to explain to voters why they should vote for "Chioke's Mom"! WOW! Just plain ole' WOW! PEOPLE if you don't leave this post with anything else, please remember, stamp on your brain...give our generation Z'ers and beyond something to believe in, trust and support, and they will make things happen!! Thank you to Memphis Voyager! As a Community-Led Efforts Intermediary, we work to engage, organize, mobilize, support and equip community stakeholders to identify and create solutions to the root causes hindering sustained and thriving whole communities, whole families and ultimately, whole children. Bandaides on bullet wounds SOLVE nothing. Until we actually LISTEN TO THOSE IMPACTED and INTENTIONALLY ACT based ON WHAT IS SAID, we will only continue to accommodate and perpetuate poverty, violence and the mis/under-education of our youth. Unmuting the voices of those living the experience, and supporting their COMMUNITY, SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC ENGAGEMENT is crucial to long-term transformative and sustainable neighborhoods/communities!
