Congratulations to our founder and managing principal Ryan Burgess on this great feat??
?? Climate change significantly threatens children's mental health, exacerbating challenges like developmental issues, depression, and poverty. Extreme weather events, heat waves, and air pollution can cause trauma, anxiety, depression, and cognitive impairment. These impacts disproportionately affect marginalized communities and can begin prenatally, potentially leading to long-term developmental issues. Despite children's vulnerability to climate change, many national adaptation policies overlook how climate affects children's mental health. A study of 160 policies found that none referred to children's mental health; 28% included no child-specific measures; and only 3% addressed seven or more domains. Common measures included education and awareness, but overall, there's insufficient recognition of children's climate change susceptibility. Educational initiatives integrating climate action into schooling can enhance learning, increase climate awareness, and potentially improve mental health by fostering agency and purpose. For example, in Kyrgyzstan, projects like 'Eco Firewood' and a "Hydroponic Gardening Eco-Mathematics Club" allowed students to apply math skills to environmental issues. Such programs make learning more engaging and relevant while developing problem-solving skills and increasing learning about climate-related topics. This approach could mitigate eco-anxiety by providing children with concrete ways to take action, and strengthens the importance of integrating mental health and education aspects in climate adaptation policies. Climate, Learning, and Children It’s a new week and we’re excited because it’s Climate Week in NYC! More than 600 events and activities will take place all across the City. Climate Group in collaboration with the City of New York and the United Nations General Assembly will ?host a series of events involving local decision-makers and global civil society to support climate action.[i] This year, Climate Week NYC’s theme is It’s Time. Collaborative efforts will facilitate public access to tangible solutions for a sustainable economy, as the theme emphasizes the urgent need for expedited solutions.[ii] During the course of the week and in upcoming weeks, Whole Child Advisors will offer a holistic lens on effects and considerations related to climate change, children, and learning. There is growing concern about the effects of climate change on children and youth, in particular considering critical stages in development between early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescents. may affect them. It is essential to comprehend the relationship between children, learning, and climate change to respond adequately, create support networks, and ensure child/youth engagement as part of solutions. There are a number of issues to consider: Children's mental health is greatly impacted by climate change, which can result in chronic crisis, PTSD, or long-term psychological distress. Environmental stressors have an effect on pregnancy and the early years of a child's life by causing developmental delays and maternal anxiety. Adolescence is a critical time for emotional and cognitive development, and climate change may make these problems more difficult. Ensuring a supportive environment and addressing these difficulties at an early age are critical for children's resilience, health, and overall well-being. [iii] Follow us for more insights and updates as we dive into these topics on climate change, children, and learning. Our aim is to enhance the systemic impact of foundations and key organizations on issues affecting families, communities, and children. Project-based learning (and other experiential and active learning approaches) can improve social, emotional, and cognitive outcomes, and increase relevance of schooling and develop the range of skills students need.
With the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) setting the benchmark for global education standards, our Project based Learning (PBL)interventions are sparking a movement—empowering students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills, helping? students tackle real-world problems, aligning with PISA's focus on applying knowledge. As highlighted by Mr. Aditya Nataraj, Chief Executive Officer, Piramal Foundation, PBL is not just moving the needle on global benchmarks—it's equipping students in India with the skills needed for the workforce and the challenges of the future. At SOESC, we recognize the importance of implementing initiatives that go beyond traditional education to truly prepare students for life. By integrating PBL into the? educational framework, we’re committed to fostering resilience, creativity, and social responsibility in the next generation. Great to see this momentum of the Sampoorna program in Telangana, India and the work of Global Center for the Development of the Whole Child (GC-DWC) supporting the state government to integrate whole child and SEL learning as part of the requirements to become a teacher. #SEL #wholechild #teacherprofesionaldevelopment
The Telangana state government asked the GC-DWC to develop curriculum focused on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Whole Child Development (WCD) for a new course being implemented in over 70 universities and colleges in India. Designed by GC-DWC faculty and staff, the semester-long course, titled “A Whole School Approach to Social and Emotional Learning”, provides students with a practical and evidence-based introduction to how SEL practices can be incorporated across schools to better support the learning and development of children. SEL focuses on children’s ability to understand and manage emotions, feel and show empathy, and develop positive relationships. The course will be a requirement for university students majoring in education—as the ultimate means of sustaining and expanding SEL statewide—and will end with a two-day workshop where students will engage in practical training on how whole-school SEL approaches are being integrated into the Tribal and Social Welfare Societies’ residential schools for marginalized children in Telangana, through the GC-DWC’s Project Sampoorna. Education in Telangana needs to evolve to keep pace with India’s modern economy. SEL skills are more important than ever, and embedding these courses into required training of all future teachers in these university education degree programs will advance this objective, and sustain them into the future.
