GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality and Whitman-Walker Institute Highlight New Study on the Adoption Rates of Expanded Gender Markers in the National Provider Identifier (NPI) System. A recent study explores the adoption of new gender markers by health professionals, following the expansion of the NPI system to include additional options for gender identity, including options for non-binary health professionals, alongside the "male" and "female” options. The inclusion of "unspecified or another gender identity (X) and undisclosed (U)" gender markers were the result of an advocacy initiative led by GLMA in collaboration with Whitman-Walker Institute. Effective beginning in April 2024, this change aimed to promote inclusivity and equity within healthcare systems. It allows health professionals to accurately represent their gender identity, aligning with legal documents and enhancing the accuracy of research and directories. The study is authored by Jae Corman, PhD, Head of Analytics & Research at FOLX Health and Julia "Yulia" Przedworski, PhD, at Diversity Science, and applauded by Jona Tanguay, MMSc, PA-C, AAHIVS, GLMA President and Medical Lead at Whitman-Walker; Kellan E. Baker, PhD, MPH, MA, and Executive Director of Whitman-Walker Institute. The final study can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ef_88Aem #whitmanwalkerinstitute #glma #genderidentity #X #gendermarker

Congratulations to one of Whitman-Walker's great dentists, Dr. Robert Mckernan, DDS, who was featured in a substantial article in "Dentaltown Magazine" where he spoke about his work with us! "After I left the family practice, I joined the Whitman-Walker Health (WWH) public health center at their Max Robinson Center in Southeast D.C. WWH is a leader in HIV care and has been open for more than 50 years. It began as the Gay Men’s Center for Venereal Diseases and has since evolved into a comprehensive health center, serving some of the most disadvantaged members of our community. WWH’s mission and values aligned with mine, and I had volunteered at a Ryan White clinic previously, so the decision was easy. When I started at WWH, I was the only dentist at its Max Robinson location, which was a small two-chair practice in a former firehouse building that had been converted into a health center. I and a dental assistant treated patients alongside physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. There, I gained experience treating medically complex cases and patients, and could pull primary care providers readily for consults if I noted abnormal HIV presentations, palpable lymphadenopathy or other abnormal pathology related to the oral cavity, head and neck. After I had worked at WWH for two years, the construction on the new Max Robinson center was concluded. The new facility is a state-of-the-art clinic with more than four times the space, and now features a dental staff of 11. It was incredibly rewarding to assist the center’s growth and provide quality patient care, and I still volunteer there on alternate Fridays. In the end, I had the privilege to work there while simultaneously purchasing a commercial space—all while building up our own private practice during the evenings and weekends." Last week, Whitman-Walker Institute's Director of Policy Caroline Medina had the privilege of interviewing Melanie Fontes Rainer, Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), on the critical role of Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act in protecting #LGBTQI+ communities from discrimination in health care and health insurance. This week, The White House gathered over 100 leaders (and many more virtually) at the ?Adelante! Summit to accelerate our nation's HIV response in Hispanic/Latino communities. Whitman-Walker’s Senior Director of Community Health, Juan Carlos Loubriel, was a proud participant. The Summit honored those whose lives were cut short in the early years of HIV and AIDS and discussed carrying their memory forward through their legacy of hard work, hope, and ganas, as they look toward a future where the HIV epidemic in Latino communities is met with urgency and visibility. ?Their vision is to ensure health, equity, and opportunity for all members of our communities. All vowed to continue to advance the Biden-Harris Administration’s National HIV/AIDS Strategy, through support of one or more of the pillars: prevent new infections, improve health outcomes for people with HIV, reduce health disparities, and create more coordinated efforts across governments, communities, and sectors. #AdelanteHIVSummit #HispanicHeritageMonth #HIV #whitmanwalker #weseeyou @hivgov, @whitehouse @lacasablanca
