Thank you so much for this wonderful post, Anthony Shop, about the fearless leader of Whitman-Walker Health, Naseema Shafi! We're so proud she is our CEO! ??

    查看Anthony Shop的档案

Co-Founder of Social Driver, Chairman of National Digital Roundtable, Host of Chief Influencer Podcast

Naseema Shafi, the CEO of Whitman-Walker Health, is a local leader we should all know. The Elizabeth Taylor Center was just around the corner from us when we moved to Washington, DC in 2009. Today, that building is The LIZ - and it’s where we met for coffee. Whitman-Walker was historically known as a pioneering healthcare provider rooted in serving Washington, DC’s LGBTQ+ community and people living with HIV/AIDS. Their work was essential and impactful. Over the years, the organization has evolved from crisis response to holistic healthcare. Naseema led an unprecedented expansion of this community pillar. including the new Max Robinson Center at St. Elizabeths East Campus. I’m proud that Social Driver and The Driver Foundation support their work. And I’m inspired by Naseema and her journey from Director of Compliance to CEO.

We want to thank everyone who packed Her Diner on March 22nd to support community-based health care and life-saving research. Thanks to the team at Her Diner and the talents of Mia Vanderbilt (Emcee), Darcy de la Cuadra, Daya B Tease, and Queenie Iman, we brunched –and moved to the music with purpose. We also must thank Barry’s Boot Camp; Bluestone Lane at 14th and R, NW; Madabolic; Jane Jane and Three Fifty Bakery and Coffee Bar for donating to our raffle. The fabulous prizes generated $3,000 in raffle ticket sales in less than a hour. Wow! We are not going to lie. After a week that included losing 40 percent of our federal research budget and pushing back against proposals to slash Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funding for #HIV prevention, we needed the lift that comes from community—and you all delivered in diva-like style! Together, we will continue standing up for the patients we are privileged to serve and the research that makes our country’s health system fairer and more equitable. #WhitmanWalker #WeSeeYou #WeNeedYou

It was wonderful to welcome Nancy Forsyth Hafstad and Kim Stephenson of Gilead Sciences to our Max Robinson Center in Ward 8. Dr. Heather Aaron EdD, MPH and Ted Miller thanked Gilead for supporting the construction of Max as well as partnering on a number of health- and research-related projects. Keeping in conversation with longtime allies is especially important as we navigate the federal government's cuts to our life-saving research programs. Having such strong corporate support fuels our resolve?in challenging times. #whitmanwalker #weseeyou #weneedyou #HIV

This month, I held a two-part retreat for my team that focused on our crisis response efforts and leadership. I’m proud that one outcome of the retreat is a new group of grants (to be announced soon) to support advocacy efforts aimed at protecting and supporting the region and its residents. Thanks to Heather Aaron EdD, MPH and Ted Miller for hosting us at Whitman-Walker’s Max Robinson Center — a beautiful, inspiring, and community-centered space! Thanks also to Nate Wong for hosting part one of the retreat!

In the immediate wake of news that the Trump Administration is considering the shutdown of the CDC’s HIV Prevention Division, thirteen leading #LGBTQ, #HIV, and #Health Organizations Across U.S. have come together to condemn that action, and are releasing the following statement: ?????????????? ??????????, ??????, ?????? ???????????? ?????????????????????????? ???????????? ??.??. ?????????????? ?????????? ????????????????????????????’?? ???????? ???? ?????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????????? ????????????????? ? March 19, 2025–Thirteen of the nation’s leading LGBTQ+, HIV, and health organizations are uniting to raise the alarm about the Trump administration’s planned actions to defund critical HIV prevention efforts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The anticipated actions will severely impede the nation’s ability to prevent new HIV infections, undoing decades of hard-won progress toward ending the HIV epidemic. “We are deeply concerned by the Trump administration’s reckless moves to defund and deprioritize HIV prevention. These abrupt and incomprehensible possible cuts threaten to reverse decades of progress, exposing our nation to a resurgence of a preventable disease with devastating and avoidable human and financial costs. Without the critical support of the CDC HIV Prevention Division, countless lives will be at risk—more people will fall ill, more lives will be lost, and we will be thrust back into an HIV epidemic reminiscent of the darkest chapters in public health history,” said the CEOs of the aligned organizations listed below. The following LGBTQ, HIV and health organizations condemn the Trump administration's planned actions to defund critical HIV prevention efforts at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): APLA Health, Los Angeles, CEO Craig E. President Trump recently signed a slate of executive orders (EOs), many of which endanger the health, well-being, and safety of underserved communities, including transgender people. These orders have sought to?redefine sex?and sex-based discrimination for federal policy purposes to exclude transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people (Executive Order?14168) and?ban best-practice medical care?for transgender people under age 19 (Executive Order?14187). Many of the provisions in these EOs cannot take effect immediately, as implementation often requires regulatory rulemaking, administrative guidance, and other procedural steps that may take months or years. The policy directives outlined in these EOs, however, are already having swift and significant effects on the everyday lives of millions of people. This article for Health Affairs, co-written (with others) by Caroline Medina, Director of Policy and Sara Mar, Advocacy and Comms Strategist, at The Institute for Health Research & Policy at Whitman-Walker, examines the potential impacts of these orders on transgender health across key policy areas. Whitman-Walker appreciates Sara G. and Alex Orfinger of the Washington Business Journal for profiling Heather Aaron EdD, MPH, the CEO of the Whitman-Walker Health System, as part of their CEO Spotlight series. In the profile, Dr. Aaron elaborates on the experience she brings — from working diligently in community to address the AIDS crisis and then overseeing the state of Connecticut's public health response to the Covid-19 pandemic — to one of DC’s most well-known health providers. She also talks about her childhood in Trinidad and Tobago, and how her parents emphasized academic achievement. Outside of work, look for her to be tending to the roses and enjoying the beauty around her. And, in terms of challenging climate in which we find ourselves, Dr. Aaron weighs in on how the Whitman-Walker Health System is positioning itself to ensure that life-saving research continues, especially in Southeast DC.
